Stephan: Climate change is just one of the massive transitions facing us. As this report lays out very quickly we are becoming a majority minority population. Existentially, this is going to mean that being born White will no longer confer privilege. I had a conversation with a Black friend a few weeks ago, and we got to talking about Ferguson, and he said to me "No man my color reaches adulthood, who grows up in a city, without unpleasant experiences involving the police." And as he said it, I saw the chasm that is normally invisible. My experience was just the opposite.
Here is a picture of the shifting demographics of the United States. This is a huge deal, in my mind one of the great meta-trends. The Census study, released this week, predicts that by year 2060, nearly 20percent of the population will be foreign born – thanks to an influx of 64million new immigrants.
The populations of Hispanics in the US will rise 114percent – from 55million in 2014 to 63.6million in 2060 – making up about 29percent of the population.
And the number of non-Hispanic whites will actually likely to decline over the next 40 years – from 200million and 62percent of the population now to 182million and 44percent of the population in 2060.
