Articles of Impeachment

Stephan:  Representative Cynthia McKinney, just before the last Congress and her term ended, introduced Articles of Impeachment. I have not been a fan of Rep. McKinney, but this document deserves to be carefully read, and thought about. This is true whether you agree with it or not. It will be interesting to see how history treats this.

109th CONGRESS 2d Session H. RES. 1106 Articles of Impeachment against George Walker Bush, President of the United States of America, and other officials, for high crimes and misdemeanors. IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES December 8, 2006 Ms. MCKINNEY submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary RESOLUTION Articles of Impeachment against George Walker Bush, President of the United States of America, and other officials, for high crimes and misdemeanors. Resolved, That George Walker Bush, President of the United States, is impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors, and that the following Articles of Impeachment be exhibited to the United States Senate: Articles of Impeachment exhibited by the House of Representatives of the United States of America in the name of itself and of all the people of the United States of America, against George Walker Bush, President of the United States of America, and other officials, in maintenance and support of its impeachment against him for high crimes and misdemeanors. Be it resolved by the House […]

Cakewalk Crowd Abandons Bush

Stephan:  It is fascinating in a macabre sort of way to watch what is happening. Pat Buchanan who, to his credit, opposed this war from the beginning, if for his own reasons, has a very good take on this phenomenon. Thanks to James Spottiswoode.

Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan, said a rueful John F. Kennedy after the Bay of Pigs. George W. Bush knows today whereof his predecessor spoke. For as he prepares to ‘surge’ 20,000 more U.S. troops into a war even he concedes we ‘are not winning,’ his erstwhile acolytes have begun to abandon him to salvage their own tattered reputations. Case in point, the neoconservatives. As the Iraq war heads into its fifth year, more than half a dozen have confessed to Vanity Fair’s David Rose their abject despair over how the Bushites mismanaged the war that they, the ‘Vulcans,’ so brilliantly conceived. Surveying what appears an impending disaster for Iraq and U.S. foreign policy, the neocons have advanced a new theme. The idea of launching an unprovoked war of liberation, for which they had beaten the drums for half a decade before 9-11, remains a lovely concept. It was Bushite incompetence that fouled it up. ‘The policy can be absolutely right, and noble, beneficial, but if you can’t execute it, it’s useless, just useless,’ wails Ken Adelman, who had famously predicted in the Washington Post that ‘liberating Iraq would be a […]

Democratic Leaders Oppose More U.S. Troops in Iraq

Stephan:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said they won’t support any proposal by President George W. Bush to increase U.S. forces in Iraq, an option he is considering as he works on a new plan to quell sectarian violence there. ‘Adding more combat troops will only endanger more Americans and stretch our military to the breaking point for no strategic gain,” the top two congressional Democratic leaders wrote in a letter to Bush. “It would undermine our efforts to get the Iraqis to take responsibility for their own future. We are well past the point of more troops for Iraq.” Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, said Democrats are considering options to limit the U.S. involvement, including setting a cap on U.S. troop levels and requiring Bush to obtain congressional approval to exceed it. The letter from Pelosi and Reid comes as Bush prepares to lay out a plan next week for new U.S. steps in Iraq and signals Democrats’ efforts to thwart any troop increase or exact a political price if Bush orders one. ‘There will be the eyes of the American people on everything […]

Hamas Defiant on ‘Illegal’ Force

Stephan:  How can there possibly be peace? Who speaks for the Palestinians? Should the world wait until the Palestinians fight to an internal settlement?

The Hamas-led Government has defied a demand by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to integrate its Gaza Strip military force into the established security set up. It then deepened the existing tension by announcing that it would double the size of the force to 12,000 men. The demand by Mr Abbas is likely to further increase the tensions between his Fatah movement and Hamas, which defeated Fatah in parliamentary elections a year ago. In a statement, Mr Abbas said he considered the Hamas force and its officers as ‘illegal’ and ‘outlawed’. This announcement came just two days after Hamas militants killed a senior Fatah security commander in Gaza. But a spokesman for Hamas says the force was created by the Hamas Government and can only be dismantled by another decision by the Hamas administration. Hamas created the force after forming the Government last March, and had defied a previous order by Mr Abbas to integrate the personnel into the existing security services. Meanwhile medics and witnesses in Gaza say three Palestinians have been killed and nine wounded in clashes between two powerful clans.

How Old is the Grand Canyon? Park Service Ordered by Bush Administration to Cater to Creationists

Stephan:  It's hard to say whether this is pathetic, incompetent, or yet another example of the sale of the U.S. government to special interest groups. But this is like teaching children the Earth is flat. At the least it is shameful, and the park service personnel clearly are embarrassed by what they are being required to do.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Grand Canyon National Park is not permitted to give an official estimate of the geologic age of its principal feature, due to pressure from Bush administration appointees. Despite promising a prompt review of its approval for a book claiming the Grand Canyon was created by Noah’s flood rather than by geologic forces, more than three years later no review has ever been done and the book remains on sale at the park, according to documents released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). ‘In order to avoid offending religious fundamentalists, our National Park Service is under orders to suspend its belief in geology,’ stated PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch. ‘It is disconcerting that the official position of a national park as to the geologic age of the Grand Canyon is ‘no comment.” In a letter released today, PEER urged the new Director of the National Park Service (NPS), Mary Bomar, to end the stalling tactics, remove the book from sale at the park and allow park interpretive rangers to honestly answer questions from the public about the geologic age of the Grand Canyon. PEER is also asking Director Bomar to approve a pamphlet, […]
