ERIE, Pa.– An Erie cancer researcher has found a way to burn salt water, a novel invention that is being touted by one chemist as the ‘most remarkable’ water science discovery in a century. John Kanzius happened upon the discovery accidentally when he tried to desalinate seawater with a radio-frequency generator he developed to treat cancer. He discovered that as long as the salt water was exposed to the radio frequencies, it would burn. The discovery has scientists excited by the prospect of using salt water, the most abundant resource on earth, as a fuel. Rustum Roy, a Penn State University chemist, has held demonstrations at his State College lab to confirm his own observations. The radio frequencies act to weaken the bonds between the elements that make up salt water, releasing the hydrogen, Roy said. Once ignited, the hydrogen will burn as long as it is exposed to the frequencies, he said. The discovery is ‘the most remarkable in water science in 100 years,’ Roy said. ‘This is the most abundant element in the world. It is everywhere,’ Roy said. ‘Seeing it burn gives me the chills.’ Roy will meet this week […]
Vitamin D is good for your bones, doctors have said for years, but new research suggests that taking a vitamin pill a day might extend your life. The findings, published yesterday in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, add to the growing medical literature about the benefits of what is sometimes called the ‘sunshine vitamin’ because it is produced by the skin in response to sunlight. Recent studies have linked vitamin D deficiencies to higher risk of cancer, diabetes and multiple sclerosis. It could play a role in reducing heart disease and preventing pre-eclampsia in pregnant women. ‘It’s very new to see [the effects of] vitamin D on organs different than the bones,’ said Dr. Philippe Autier, a co-author of the study. ‘These are very ordinary doses. You don’t need four or five pills a day. … ‘You should probably get rid of all the other’ vitamins in the medicine cabinet, Autier said by phone from Lyon, France, where he is a researcher at the International Agency for Research on Cancer. ‘At this point, that’s where we are. This is quite real.’ Consumers are getting used to being told about new benefits of vitamins. Yesterday, […]
The National Association of Broadcasters has announced its intention to derail efforts to use valuable but unused broadcast airwaves - known as ‘white spaces’ - for unlicensed, wireless broadband. Free Press Policy Director Ben Scott issued the following statement: ‘The National Association of Broadcasters is engaged in a campaign of misinformation to persuade Congress and regulators to ignore the innovative potential that unused public airwaves hold - blocking a valuable opportunity to connect tens of millions of Americans to an affordable Internet. ‘Every market in the country has set aside unused public airwaves for broadcast television. In some communities, more than three-quarters of these ‘white spaces’ are vacant. These empty spaces on the public spectrum represent an enormous public resource that could be used by other communications services. The social and economic benefits of utilizing these unused airwaves far outweigh the shortsighted fears of the broadcast industry. ‘But through false assumptions and twisted facts, the NAB is attempting to collapse the entire white spaces debate into a single test of prototype devices at the FCC. In reality, the recent round of tests is a part of a process to use technology to maximize the public benefit derived […]
As some of you may already be aware, the loss of arctic sea ice this summer has been extraordinary. According to the NSIDC, the amount of ice that melted this year that had never melted since recording began is about the size of the State of Florida. The NSIDC website is updated a couple of times a week with the latest sea ice extent measurements and I watch the numbers with horror because I am one of those who think we have gone past the tipping point already and news like this just further validates my opinion. Well in todays update there was a very scary section I want to share with you related to the BIG tipping point for climate change: changes to ocean circulation patterns. I was concerned back in May that there was evidence out there indicating that the ocean circulation patterns may have already changed. You can read that diary here in case you missed it: Have the ocean’s circulation patterns ALREADY been altered? Today’s update at NSIDC has confirmed that ocean circulation patterns have changed on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the Arctic Ocean. […]
According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday, the United States is free of the dog specific form of rabies known as canine rabies. This does not mean all rabies has gone, only the strain that can be transmitted from dog to dog. It is still rife in the bat, racoon and skunk population and dogs and humans can still become infected if bitten by one of these animals. Chief of the CDC Rabies Program, Dr Charles Rupprecht, said that: ‘The elimination of canine rabies in the United States represents one of the major public health success stories in the last 50 years.’ ‘However, there is still much work to be done to prevent and control rabies globally,’ he added. The announcement coincided with World Rabies Day, but Dr Deborah Briggs, Executive Director of Alliance for Rabies Control said the CDC news should be seen as more than a ‘one day event’: ‘This is the first-step in a long-term effort towards human rabies prevention and animal rabies control globally.’ Over the last decades US state and local public health authorities have been ‘working tirelessly’ to prevent […]
