Bush: US Must ‘Get Off Oil’

Stephan:  It has taken almost eight years to see the obvious.

WASHINGTON — President Bush said Wednesday that the United States has to ‘get off oil’ to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and declared ‘it should be obvious’ that high demand is creating painful gasoline prices. Bush’s assessment was at odds with that from the 13-nation Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which said before he spoke that it would not put more oil on the global market because crude supplies are plentiful. OPEC President Chakib Khelil told reporters in Vienna, Austria, that the problems in the U.S. economy were a key factor in the cartel’s decision to hold off on any action. ‘There is sufficient supply. There’s plenty of oil there,’ he said. In an address to the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference, Bush said, ‘It should be obvious to you all that the demand is outstripping supply, which causes prices to go up.’ During a Middle East trip in January, Bush urged OPEC to increase production and help ease soaring gasoline prices. Bush also said on Tuesday that it’s a ‘mistake to have your biggest customers’ economies slowing down as a result of higher energy prices.’ The White House said it disagreed with OPEC’s […]

Moscow: New World Capital for Billionaires

Stephan:

Moscow has overtaken New York City as home to the most billionaires, according to Forbes magazine, with 74 of the super-rich elite now counting the Russian capital as their home. By contrast, 71 billionaires live in New York, according to the magazine’s annual list, which placed London in third place with 36. ‘Russia is again the dominant story in (Europe) this year. Its billionaires are just fast and fearsome. What’s fascinating is that every single one of them is self made,’ said Forbes senior editor Luisa Kroll. ‘We’re not going to get into exactly how they got it but none of them inherited it and their average age is 46,’ she added. Russia now counts a total of 87 billionaires, ousting Germany in second place but still trailing the first-placed United States, which has 469. Russian oligarchs have made seen their fortunes rise in recent years thanks to booming commodity prices. Among the top-placed Russian figures were aluminum magnate Oleg Deripaska, valued at 28 billion dollars and Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich, said to be worth 23.5 billion dollars.

Eating Breakfast Helps Teens Lose Weight, Says US Study

Stephan:  Thanks to Ronlyn Osmond.

Eating breakfast helps teenagers lose weight, a survey of eating habits in the United States has found. The study showed that those who tuck in to a healthy breakfast – and therefore end up with a higher calorie intake – still tend to have a lower body mass index than those who skip the first meal of the day. The research was conducted at the University of Minnesota and published in the Paediatrics journal. Dr Mark Pereira, who led the research, admitted the study could paint a confusing picture for those who believe that the less you eat the less you weigh. ‘It may seem counterintuitive,’ he said. ‘But while they ate more calories, they did more to burn those off, and that may be because those who ate breakfast did not feel so lethargic.’ Dr Peraira added that even cooked breakfasts were better than missing out on food altogether. ‘While it’s best to go for a healthy option – a wholegrain cereal for instance – the evidence does seem to suggest that eating anything is better than eating nothing.’ The research is one of a number of recent studies that give credence to […]

US Review Finds No Good Drugs for Dementia

Stephan:

WASHINGTON — There are no good drugs to treat dementia and doctors just need to try them in a hit-or-miss fashion to try to help patients, according to new guidelines released on Monday. Experts who tried to set up treatment guidelines were disappointed to find no good options for patients with dementia, and no way to determine which drug might be best for certain cases. ‘There is no cure for dementia and many of the drugs … are being prescribed without evidence,’ Dr. Amir Qaseem of the American College of Physicians, who led the study, said in a telephone interview. ‘The benefits of therapy may be very modest.’ Qaseem and colleagues at the American Academy of Family Physicians reviewed the results of 96 different studies of five different drugs approved for treating dementia. Four are in a class of drugs called cholinesterase inhibitors — Pfizer and Eisai Co Inc’s Aricept; galantamine, sold generically and under the brand names Razadyne, Reminyl and Nivalin; rivastigmine, sold by Novartis AG under the brand name Exelone; and tacrine, marketed to combat Alzheimer’s disease under the brand name Cognex. The fifth drug, memantine, is known as a neuropeptide -modifying […]
