TapRoot Systems today announced new Windows Mobile and Symbian S60 smartphone software, claiming it enables users to convert their 3G phones into mobile Wi-Fi hotspots for a handful of users at one time. The company said its software allows users to have up to five connections to the same Wi-Fi connection at a time. TapRoot is reportedly working on a free trial edition that lets users try the software with just one connection at a time. The company hopes to approach mobile providers and have them deploy the software as a service for a monthly fee. Many users today find it a hassle to try and connect a smartphone with a notebook via Bluetooth or a cable, and have been left with very few alternatives for mobile Internet. Utilizing an EV-DO card is the most common way, but connections can be spotty and the service can be too expensive for a casual user to bother buying the card and paying for the monthly service. The increasing influence of Islam on British culture is disclosed in research today that shows the number of Muslims worshipping at mosques in England and Wales will outstrip the numbers of Roman Catholics going to church in little more than a decade. Muslims kneel for prayer in a London mosque: Muslims ‘will soon outnumber traditional churchgoers’ Projections show Muslims are to outstrip Catholic Sunday worshippers by 2020 Projections to be published next month estimate that, if trends continue, the number of Catholic worshippers at Sunday Mass will fall to 679,000 by 2020. By that time, statisticians predict, the number of Muslims praying in mosques on Fridays will have increased to 683,000. The Christian Research figures also suggest that, over the same period, the number of Muslims at mosques will overtake Church of England members at Sunday services. Church spokesmen point out, however, that a growing number of Anglicans worship at other times of the week. A big waistline in your 40s could almost triple the threat of dementia in old age, according to US research. Obesity is a known risk factor for Alzheimer’s, but scientists found even those of normal weight were more at risk if they had a large waist. However, the study of 6,500 people, published in the journal Neurology, found obesity and bulging stomach was still the most dangerous combination. An obesity expert said waist size was a good guide to future health problems. Research linking obesity to dementia does not reveal precisely why being overweight can affect your ageing brain, but many specialists believe that associated problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol levels may contribute. Thickness of fat around the waist is thought to correspond closely with its presence around the major organs of the body. The latest study suggests that while the standard measure of obesity – body mass index – can help predict those at risk, the lifestyles which produce large bellies may have a closer relationship with the long-term causes of dementia. Before she underwent breast augmentation surgery last summer, Melissa Wohl said she felt self-conscious about her body — especially at the beach. ‘I wasn’t as developed as some of my friends, who were filling out their bathing suits,’ said Wohl, 19, of Wantagh, who now attends Binghamton University. ‘I guess I felt like I didn’t fit in.’ Wohl is among an increasing number of young women looking to plastic surgery for a boost in confidence as well as cup size. Kuleba, whose parents say she sought the surgery to correct an inverted nipple and asymmetrical breasts, died Saturday of what may have been a rare genetic reaction to general anesthesia. WASHINGTON — A chunk of Antarctic ice about seven times the size of Manhattan suddenly collapsed, putting an even greater portion of glacial ice at risk, scientists said Tuesday. Satellite images show the runaway disintegration of a 160-square-mile chunk in western Antarctica, which started Feb. 28. It was the edge of the Wilkins ice shelf and has been there for hundreds, maybe 1,500 years. This is the result of global warming, said British Antarctic Survey scientist David Vaughan. Because scientists noticed satellite images within hours, they diverted satellite cameras and even flew an airplane over the ongoing collapse for rare pictures and video. ‘It’s an event we don’t get to see very often,’ said Ted Scambos, lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo. ‘The cracks fill with water and slice off and topple… That gets to be a runaway situation.’ While icebergs naturally break away from the mainland, collapses like this are unusual but are happening more frequently in recent decades, Vaughan said.
