UFOs hovering over Waterloo Bridge? Green men known as Elgar? This can only mean the British ‘X-Files’ have been opened up to the public for the first time. The fascinating reports, taken so seriously they were documented by the Ministry of Defence, have been revealed after a Freedom of Information request by UFO researchers. And, according to the files, the number of reports of UFOs doubled after the release of Steven Speilberg’s sci-fi drama Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977. Among the most sensational is the famous Rendlesham Forest case. A report from Lt.Col Charles Halt on 13th January 1981 tells how on the night of December 27th security patrolmen spotted odd lights above the forest. They saw the lights plunge down and went to investigate. In the forest they found a triangular shaped object 9ft long by 6ft high hovering above the ground. Flashing lights The object had a pulsing red light on top with blue lights underneath. According to the patrolmen a white light coming from the UFO illuminated the whole forest. The object suddenly took off and flew away. Other airmen on the base also […]
Daily doses of statins and blood pressure medications will not be enough to prevent heart disease among the ever-growing number of Baby Boomers who are overweight or obese, a new study suggests. The simple truth, experts say, is that pounds must also be shed to keep cardiovascular trouble away. ‘There is a debate out there about whether this generation is going to live as long as their parents, and the truth is they probably won’t,’ said study author Dr. Gregory L. Burke, director of the division of public health sciences at Wake Forest University School of medicine in Winston-Salem, NC. ‘My ultimate worry is that we’ve seen a 50-year decline in cardiovascular disease mortality, but if you begin to look at recent trends, it’s beginning to plateau,’ he added. ‘And my fear is that because of the increase in obesity we’re going to begin to see a reversal of that trend where heart disease rates begin to go up.’ The research involving 6,814 men and women aged 45 to 84 revealed an even greater prevalence of overweight and obesity than shown in similar studies done five years earlier. Depending on the demographic group, between 60 percent […]
WASHINGTON — Efforts to protect the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale from being killed by ships are being blocked by Vice President Dick Cheney according to leaked documents. A behind the scenes struggle is raging between the White House and US government scientists who want to force ships to slow down near the calving grounds of the almost extinct right whale. The right whale controversy is the latest example of the Bush Administration sidestepping the advice of its on scientists which are aimed at protecting endangered species or threats to the environment. On Monday, a judge had to order the administration to release its much-delayed decision aimed at protecting the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act. Only 350 of the whales remain in Atlantic waters off America’s eastern seaboard and they are considered one of the most endangered species on Earth. Government scientists warn that the loss of just one more pregnant female is enough to doom the species, which was almost hunted to extinction in the 19th century. Every year around three right whales are either injured or killed in collisions with ocean-going vessels like containerized cargo ships even though they are protected […]
Americans are gloomier about the direction of the country than at any point since 1992, and Democrats have matched their biggest advantage in 25 years as the party better able to deal with the nation’s main problems, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Despite more than eight in 10 now saying the country is headed in the wrong direction and growing disaffection with the Republican Party, Sen. John McCain, the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee, remains competitive in a general election matchup with Sen. Barack Obama, the favorite for the Democratic nomination, and runs almost even with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Those findings indicate that McCain continues to elude some of the anger aimed at his party and at President Bush, whose own approval dipped to an all-time low in Post-ABC polling. Maintaining a separate identity will be a key to McCain’s chances of winning the White House in November. Overall, Democrats enjoy a 21-point advantage over Republicans as the party best-equipped to handle the nation’s problems. As the Democratic race nears the end of its primary-caucus season, with the next round of voting set for Tuesday in West Virginia, this new national poll shows Obama […]
Working at the University of Oxford and The Open University, Dr Lynne Cox and Dr Robert Saunders say they have found a fast and effective way to investigate important aspects of human aging. Their discovery of a gene in fruit flies means they can now be used to study the effects aging has on DNA. The researchers demonstrate the value of this model in helping us to understand the critical aspects of human aging at cellular, genetic and biochemical levels. Dr Lynne Cox from the University of Oxford said: ‘We study a premature human ageing disease called Werner syndrome to help us understand normal aging. The key to this disease is that changes in a single gene (called WRN) mean that patients age very quickly. Scientists have made great progress in working out what this gene does in the test tube, but until now we haven’t been able to investigate the gene to look at its effect on development and the whole body. By working on this gene in fruit flies, we can model human aging in a powerful experimental system.’ Dr Robert Saunders from The Open University added: ‘This work shows for the first time that […]
