It looks like Bobby Jindal’s staff has been trying to do some damage limitation on that phony Katrina story — with some help from Politico. But it’s blowing up in their faces. Picking up on an earlier post at Daily Kos, we wrote a post yesterday that raised questions about a key anecdote in Bobby Jindal’s big Tuesday night speech. You can watch the key excerpt here, but here’s the transcript: During Katrina, I visited Sheriff Harry Lee, a Democrat and a good friend of mine. When I walked into his makeshift office I’d never seen him so angry. Stephan: I publish this, not because it is news, but because it is part of a very disturbing trend in the conservative movement. There seems to be an ongoing problem with telling the truth, and a continuing commitment to appearance over substance. We are never going to navigate the Green Transition successfully if half of our political system cannot tell the truth.
The difference between the Obama people and the Bush people is now so stark in this context, that it is in danger of becoming a caricature, and Jindal and Palin, two of the new lights, sadly seem cut from the same cloth.
We must resolve this if our democracy is to remain healthy.
