Brit Hume turned evangelist on Fox New Sunday, in a segment with panelists predicting the future for Tiger Woods after Woods’ notable ‘transgressions’ (now a 2009 top euphemism, along with ‘Appalachian Trail,’ as a signifier for ‘mistress.’) Hume forecasts Woods will recover as a golfer but …Whether he can recover as a person depends on ‘his faith. He’s said to be a Buddhist. I don’t think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redeption that is offered by the Christian faith. So my message to Tiger would be, ‘Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world.’ This fits with the interview he had with The Hollywood Reporter when Hume retired from Fox News in 2008. Stephan: I do this story not because I care about the fleeting and minor phenomenon of Tiger Wood's adulterous sex life, but to make two points. The first is that fact-based news qua news has almost disappeared from some media, particularly Fox, being replaced by sensoids, whose function is not to inform -- how boring -- but to inflame passions. For more on sensoids go into the SR archives and search the term for my essay on this subject. Second, to point out that for the GOP, and particularly the conservative wing of that party, religion and politics have become one and the same. Look at any picture of GOP leadership: With the exception of a tiny cadre of women, Sarah Palin being most notable, they are middle aged, white, ostentatiously Christian, men.
The Founders would be appalled at what has happened to this country, and their founding, and absolute, commitment that church and state be separated by a fire wall.
