HAMBURG, Pa. — To millions of Americans, autumn means not just N.F.L. games and the World Series but also the start of hunting season - a few months packed with chances to stalk deer, bear, ducks and doves with rifles, shotguns, bows and even black-powder muskets.
‘Hunting is one of those sports where you can’t have too much stuff,

Stephan: Under all the family values agitprop lies a deeper truth, the real trend going on in America today. The Tea Party is a genuine grassroots movement, in the sense that it capitalizes on the real fear and anger of ordinary older conservative Whites. But it is a wholly cynical exercise in realpolitik on the part of very rich individuals and the corporate virtual states they control. Their goal is to change fundamental economic and regulatory policies in their favor, while operating under the smoke screen of family values which, from the perspective of the rich, are convenient but meaningless issues. Political junk food to keep the masses distracted.
As Deep Throat said 30 years ago, 'Follow the Money.'
New FEC filings show that American Crossroads, the Karl Rove-backed group that is pouring money into attack ads targeting Democrats around the country, continues to be funded virtually entirely by billionaires.
In August, American Crossroads raised $2,639,052. Fully $2.4 million of that — or 91 percent — came in the form of gifts from just three billionaires.
We’ve previously reported that the group is getting a staggering amount of support from billionaires, several of whom made their fortune in the energy industry and live in Texas. Last month Trevor Rees-Jones, president of Dallas-based Chief Oil and Gas, contributed another $1 million to American Crossroads, on top of the $1 million he gave earlier this year. Fellow billionaire Robert Rowling, CEO of the company TRT Holdings, also gave Crossroads his second $1 million donation in August.
The only new name on the list is American Financial Group, a Cincinnati-based firm owned by nonagenerian Carl Linder. Forbes put Linder’s net worth at $1.7 billion this year, a fortune built up through the growth of United Dairy Farmers. He previously owned Chiquita and currently owns a stake in the Cincinnati Reds. American Financial Group gave American Crossroads $400,000 last month.
Another new billionaire to […]

Stephan: This is a very grim report. AIDS, at this point, is a result mostly of behaviors, and unprotected sex, that is it is occurring because of human decisions. I am amazed that the Gay community seems to have lost its focus on this.
Almost one in every 5 sexually active gay/bisexual men, also known as MSM (men who have sex with men) is HIV positive, and 44% of them do not know they are infected, according to a CDC report – Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) – published yesterday. According to the study involving 21 major cities in the United States, those most likely to be unaware of their HIV positive status are African-American and young individuals.
Kevin Fenton, M.D., director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, said:
This study’s message is clear: HIV exacts a devastating toll on men who have sex with men in America’s major cities, and yet far too many of those who are infected don’t know it. We need to increase access to HIV testing so that more MSM know their status, and we all must bring new energy, new approaches, and new champions to the fight against HIV among men who have sex with men.
These findings add weight to President Obama’s recent drive for a National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States, which stressed that:
The United States cannot reduce the number of HIV infections […]

Stephan: These revelations about the Roman Catholic Church just get weirder and sadder. These women are obviously psychologically frail and so passionately in search of God that manipulating them through these mind trips seems particularly awful. And this scandal, like the pedophile one, has the same strange psycho-sexual religious S&M quality to it that seems to haunt so much of the Church's relationship with the larger society.
VATICAN CITY — It’s a life regimented in excruciating detail, down to the way they eat an orange. Silence is the norm, information is limited, e-mail is screened, close friendships are discouraged and family members are kept at bay – all in the name of God’s will.
Known as consecrated women, they are lay Catholics affiliated with a conservative religious order who dedicate their lives to the church, making promises of chastity, poverty and obedience similar to the vows taken by nuns.
But the cult-like conditions they endure so alarmed Pope Benedict XVI that in May he ordered an extremely rare full Vatican investigation of the obscure group, which operates in the U.S., Mexico, Spain, the Philippines and a dozen other countries. The inquiry is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
The alleged abuses came to light during an eight-month Vatican investigation into the Legionaries of Christ, a secretive religious order beloved by Pope John Paul II but now discredited because of revelations that its charismatic founder sexually abused seminarians and fathered at least three children.
The women belong to the order’s lay wing, Regnum Christi, a global community of some 70,000 Catholics in more than 30 countries who have families and regular […]

Stephan: Thanks to Damien Broderick, PhD.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Biomedical researchers at the University at Buffalo have engineered adult stem cells that scientists can grow continuously in culture, a discovery that could speed development of cost-effective treatments for diseases including heart disease, diabetes, immune disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.
UB scientists created the new cell lines – named ‘MSC Universal’ – by genetically altering mesenchymal stem cells, which are found in bone marrow and can differentiate into cell types including bone, cartilage, muscle, fat, and beta-pancreatic islet cells.
The researchers say the breakthrough overcomes a frustrating barrier to progress in the field of regenerative medicine: The difficulty of growing adult stem cells for clinical applications.
Because mesenchymal stem cells have a limited life span in laboratory cultures, scientists and doctors who use the cells in research and treatments must continuously obtain fresh samples from bone marrow donors, a process both expensive and time-consuming. In addition, mesenchymal stem cells from different donors can vary in performance.
The cells that UB researchers modified show no signs of aging in culture, but otherwise appear to function as regular mesenchymal stem cells do – including by conferring therapeutic benefits in an animal study of heart disease. Despite their propensity to proliferate in the laboratory, MSC-Universal […]
