Judge Blocks Wisconsin From Enforcing Voter Photo ID Requirement

Stephan:  Here is the latest on voter suppression, and it is excellent if, perhaps, not final news. The judge's rulling represents nothing more than common sense, and a recognition that these voter ID laws are just a modern incarnation of the unconstitutional poll tax.

On Tuesday, Circuit Judge David Flanagan ruled that Wisconsin’s new Republican-authored law requiring all voters to show photo identification to vote poses a ‘substantial burden

US Condom Crackdown Impeding Efforts to Prevent HIV, Study Finds

Stephan:  You would think that this condom campaign, when first proposed, would have been seen for the insanity it so obviously is. But in the U.S. what you do with your genitals is a matter of burning passionate interest to the Right.

Police in major cities in the United States are criminalising women who carry a stock of condoms, making sex workers and their clients less likely to use them and increasing their risk of contracting HIV, says Human Rights Watch.

A new report compiles evidence from sex workers in four major cities – Washington DC, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Interviews with more than 300 people show that those most at risk of HIV, such as sex workers and transgender women, are afraid to carry condoms in case they should be stopped and searched by police.

‘Some women told Human Rights Watch that they continued to carry condoms despite the harsh consequences. For others, fear of arrest overwhelmed their need to protect themselves from HIV, other sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy,’ says the report.

One of the interviewees, Carol F, a sex worker in Los Angeles, told HRW she had been arrested partly on the basis of carrying condoms. ‘After the arrest, I was always scared

The Big Heat

Stephan:  Elizabeth Kolbert always has an interesting take on the things she cares to write about. This essay on the climate change modulated heat wave much of the country is experiencing is an excellent example.

Corn sex is complicated. As Michael Pollan observes in ‘The Omnivore’s Dilemma,

Study Finds Costs Associated With Voter IDs

Stephan:  Here is a fact based assessment of the costs associated with the Republican Party's voter suppression program. The cynicism of this effort, knowing that voter suppression is an attack on the process of democracy itself, is a manifestation of our social shadow.

New laws in 10 states requiring voters to show IDs could present serious challenges to voters without financial resources and transportation, according to a report released Wednesday.

The study by the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law, which opposes the new laws, found several obstacles that could keep voters from being able to cast ballots, including limited access to offices that issue the IDs required under the new measures.

‘The advocates of these laws kept saying we’re going to provide these IDs for free and that’s going to eliminate all of the problems,

Human Corpses Are Prize in Global Drive for Profits

Stephan:  This trend cries out for regulation. I imagine what it would be like to have to answer. 'What do you do?', someone would ask. 'I make a profit from dismembering and selling corpses.' I would have to reply. The buying and selling of body parts is an industry that will only exist until organs can be grown. But even in this short time it has shown what happens when profit trumps all other considerations.

On Feb. 24, Ukrainian authorities made an alarming discovery: bones and other human tissues crammed into coolers in a grimy white minibus.

Investigators grew even more intrigued when they found, amid the body parts, envelopes stuffed with cash and autopsy results written in English.

What the security service had disrupted was not the work of a serial killer but part of an international pipeline of ingredients for medical and dental products that are routinely implanted into people around the world.

The seized documents suggested that the remains of dead Ukrainians were destined for a factory in Germany belonging to the subsidiary of a U.S. medical products company, Florida-based RTI Biologics.

RTI is one of a growing industry of companies that make profits by turning mortal remains into everything from dental implants to bladder slings to wrinkle cures.

The industry has flourished even as its practices have roused concerns about how tissues are obtained and how well grieving families and transplant patients are informed about the realities and risks of the business.

In the U.S. alone, the biggest market and the biggest supplier, an estimated two million products derived from human tissue are sold each year, a figure that has doubled over the past decade.

It is an […]
