ROBYN VINTER, - Farmers Weekly
Stephan: The more we learn of the GMO story, the more it looks like an incredible miscalculation or a scam.
Some US farmers are considering returning to conventional seed after increased pest resistance and crop failures meant GM crops saw smaller yields globally than their non-GM counterparts.
Farmers in the USA pay about an extra $100 per acre for GM seed, and many are questioning whether they will continue to see benefits from using GMs.
‘It’s all about cost benefit analysis,’ said economist Dan Basse, president of American agricultural research company AgResource.
‘Farmers are paying extra for the technology but have seen yields which are no better than 10 years ago. They’re starting to wonder why they’re spending extra money on the technology.’
One of the biggest problems the USA has seen with GM seed is resistance. While it was expected to be 40 years before resistance began to develop pests such as corn rootworm have formed a resistance to GM crops in as few as 14 years.

ANTHONY GUCCIARDI, - Nation of Change
Stephan: It seems like every week or so some nasty little research finding about GMOs emerges in the research literature. Here's a popular account of the latest finding.
Yet another disturbing reason has emerged as to why you should be avoiding health-devastating genetically modified organisms, and it may be one of the most concerning yet. We know that GMO consumption has been linked to a host of serious conditions, but one thing we are not so sure about is the recent discovery of a hidden viral gene deep within genetically modified crops.
For years, GMOs have been consumed knowingly and unknowingly around the globe, with Monsanto and the United States government claiming that the altered franken crops are perfectly safe despite very limited (or virtually none in some cases) initial testing and scientists speaking out against the dangers. One such danger that has actually not been spoken about has been revealed in a recent report by a safety watchdog group known as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
Another Dirty Secret of Monsanto
In the EFSA report, which can be read online, you can find (within the scientific wording) that researchers discovered a previously unknown viral gene that is known as ‘Gene VI’. What’s concerning is that not only is the rogue gene found in the most prominent GMO crops and about 63% of GMO traits approved for use (54 […]

Stephan: Here is an excellent assessment explaining what is blocking the United States from developing a serious commitment to transit out of carbon based energy. President Obama mentioned noncarbon energy in his State of the Union address last night, but I think the truth is that once again the only real solution is for social progressives to vote. Both parties are certainly linked in many ways leading to the corruption of the democratic system in the service of corporate interests. But they are not the same, and it is a false equivalency to assert that they are. The idea that there is no difference between the parties is pernicious nonsense. Of the two, based on facts, there is a significant difference between the Republican and Democratic views on noncarbon energy.
Despite impressive green economic growth during this country’s job-challenged recovery, particularly in the wind energy sector, the conservative right is systematically seeking to reverse this trend by repealing state-mandated renewable energy targets, even if many of the states that stand to lose jobs and economic opportunity lean red.
AlterNet Right-wing groups funded by the fossil-fuel industry and the billionaire Koch brothers are rolling out a nationwide assault to repeal state Renewable Electricity Standards (RES), a key component, along with such federal tax incentives as the wind production tax credit (PTC), in driving renewable energy growth in the United States.
Twenty-nine states and the District of Columbia currently have a state-mandated RES (also known as a Renewable Portfolio Standard). Traditionally, the renewable electricity standard has received bipartisan support. Efforts in recent years to repeal or weaken state renewable standards have largely failed.
But a November 2012 Washington Post investigation revealed that the fossil-fuel and Koch-funded American Legislative Council (ALEC) and the climate-denying Heartland Institute are making this a nationwide priority in 2013.
The push to repeal these renewable standards is already evident in state legislatures in North Carolina, Virginia and Ohio.
Still, Jeff Deyette, a senior energy analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientists, called this […]

ADAM VAUGHAN, - The Guardian (U.K.)
Stephan: Here is some more good news, and yet another breakthrough in the noncarbon energy trend. Once again it is happening in Europe, not the U.S. As you can see from yesterday's edition the other developed nations are moving forward with gathering momentum while we, in the U.S., are being held back by the carbon energy interests which control the Congress.
A solar power company capable of ‘printing’ colourful glass that can generate electricity from the sun’s energy announced a £2m funding boost on Tuesday.
Oxford Photovoltaics, a spin-off from the University of Oxford, said the investment from clean-tech investors MTI Partners will help its solar glass, which can be dyed almost any colour, take a step closer to the commercial market.
‘What we say here is rather than attach [solar] photovoltaics to the building, why not make the building the photovoltaics?’ Kevin Arthur, the company’s founder and CEO, told the Guardian. ‘If you decide to build a building out of glass, then you’ve already decided to pay for the glass. If you add this, you’re adding a very small extra cost. [The solar cell treatment] costs no more than 10% of the cost of the facade.’
These generally cost between £600 and £1,000 per square metre, meaning the new cell treatment wouild cost just £60-£100 extra per square metre.
The technology works by adding a layer of transparent solid-state solar cells at most three microns thick to conventional glass, in order to turn around 12% of the solar energy received into low-carbon electricity. The power can then be exported to the national grid or […]

STEPHEN C. WEBSTER, - Artificial Intelligence in Medicine/The Raw Story
Stephan: This development may presage a major change in medicine.
The research appears in the March 2012 edition of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine.
An artificial intelligence system developed by researchers at Indiana University can diagnose illnesses and prescribe courses of treatment significantly better than a human doctor, the university said Monday.
