U.S. Ranks Near Bottom of UNICEF Report on Child Well-being

Stephan:  The cliché holds that: Our children are our future. If that is true we don't have much of a future. We don't seem to give a damn about our children and, as the UNICEF report makes clear, it shows.

The United States ranked in the bottom four of a United Nations report on child well-being. Among 29 countries, America landed second from the bottom in child poverty and held a similarly dismal position when it came to ‘child life satisfaction.

Most Energy-efficient’ LED Light Revealed by Philips

Stephan:  Lightbulbs seem such a little thing, but, as this report notes, lighting accounts for nearly 20 per cent of the world's electrical usage. Like so many little things it adds up. So I see this as very good news.

Lighting company Philips has developed an LED lamp that it describes as ‘the world’s most energy-efficient’.

It said the prototype tube lighting LED is twice as efficient as those currently used in offices and industry around the world but offers the same amount of light.

Being able to halve the amount of energy used could bring huge cost and energy savings.

Lighting accounts for more than 19% of global electricity consumption.

The prototype tube lighting produces 200 lumens per watt (200lm/W) compared with 100lm/W for equivalent strip lighting and 15lm/W for traditional light bulbs.

Light-emitting diodes have been around for years.

Traditionally, they have been used as indicators on electrical devices, such as standby lights on TVs. This was because LEDs were available only in red, but recent advances mean that other colours are now available, and the light emitted is much brighter.

White light (used for general lighting) using LEDs can be created via a number of techniques. One example is mixing red, green and blue LEDs.

It is suggested that LEDs can last for up to 100,000 hours, compared with the 1,000 hours of traditional incandescent light bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps’ (CFLs) 15,000 hours.

The technology is also much more energy-efficient, using up to 90% less […]

Inhofe: ‘MoveOn.org, George Soros, Michael Moore’ Created Global Warming Hoax

Stephan:  This is why nothing commensurate with the problem is happening in climate change remediation. The people of Oklahoma need to step up and vote this man out of office. Everybody's well-being will be improved by his departure. Click through to see the video of Senator Inhofe's exchange with Senator Bernie Sanders.

Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) on Wednesday explained that Al Gore and the United Nations get most of the blame for what he called a global warming ‘hoax,

New Research Confirms Gun Rampages Are Rising-and Armed Civilians Don’t Stop Them

Stephan:  The longer the gun argument goes on the more and more obvious it becomes that the NRA position is based entirely on polemics, and has no basis in fact. It is yet another example, like climate change, of willful ignorance in the service of fact free belief.

By the time the nation confronted the unthinkable school massacre in Connecticut last December, Mother Jones’ groundbreaking investigation of mass shootings, launched the prior summer, had shown that mass gun violence in America was on the rise. The trend appeared to be no coincidence in light of the proliferation of guns and looser gun laws nationwide. One leading criminologist took issue with our criteria, arguing that mass shootings had not become more common. But now, research from an expert on criminal justice at Texas State University further shows that gun rampages in the United States have escalated.

The research, to be published in a book in July, confirms that:

Physician-Assisted Suicide Program Wins Praise

Stephan:  I have supported patient elected life termination for 40 years, and this good report of a properly run program does not surprise me. Primary source: New England Journal of Medicine Source reference: Loggers E, et al 'Implementing a death with dignity program at a comprehensive cancer center' New Engl J Med 2013; 368: 1417-1424.

Patients, their families, and physicians have been satisfied with a ‘death with dignity’ physician-assisted suicide program made available to terminal cancer patients at a Seattle clinic, clinicians there reported.

Among 114 patients who asked about the program at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, the outpatient clinic for the city’s major cancer treatment centers, 40 passed screening examinations and ultimately received lethal prescriptions for secobarbital, although only 24 actually took the drug, according to Elizabeth Trice Loggers, MD, PhD, and colleagues at the clinic and its affiliated centers.

‘Patients, caregivers, and family members have frequently expressed gratitude after the patient obtained the prescription, regardless of whether it was ever filled or ingested, typically referencing an important sense of control in an uncertain situation,’ the authors wrote in the April 11 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

‘Our Death with Dignity program both allows patients with cancer who wish to consider this option to do so within the context of their ongoing care and accommodates variation in clinicians’ willingness to participate,’ they added. ‘The program ensures that patients (and families) are aware of all the options for high-quality, end-of-life care, including palliative and hospice care, with the opportunity to have any concerns or […]
