You’re More Likely to Get Punched to Death in Texas, and 5 Other Surprising Crime Stats

Stephan:  More Red state violence. The differential in violence between Red value States and Blue Value States is becoming more and more pronounced.

Each year, the FBI collects crime reporting from more than 18,000 city, county, state, university and tribal agencies and pulls the data together in one huge report. Here are six surprising trends from 2012.

Big city crime’s got nothing on the minor league of American metropolises. Chicago and New York, two of America’s largest cities, led the country in total homicides, but they had lower per capita homicide rates than the worst locales. In Chicago, there was one homicide for every 5,417 residents, while in New York, there was one for every 19,784 people. New Orleans, meanwhile, had one homicide for every 1,880 people; Detroit had one for every 1,832, and nearby Flint, Michigan, topped the list with 63 homicides among roughly 101,000 residents, or one homicide for every 1,613 people.

The South is America’s most violent region. The sixteen states and one district in the Southeast (Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas), make up America’s largest region with just over 37 percent of the population. It is also the most violent. The Southeast accounted for nearly 497,000 violent crimes, 41 percent of all reported violent crime […]

7 Startling Facts: An Up Close Look at Church Attendance in America

Stephan:  This survey suggests that the Theocratic Right is losing it popular support, which is a very big deal.

1. Less than 20% of Americans regularly attend church – half of what the pollsters report.

While Gallup polls and other statisticians have turned in the same percentage – about 40% of the population – of average weekend church attendees for the past 70 years, a different sort of research paints quite a disparate picture of how many Americans attend a local church on any given Sunday.

Initially prompted to discover how church plants in America were really doing, Olson, director of church planting for the Evangelical Covenant Church (covchurch.org), began collecting data in the late ’80s, gradually expanding his research to encompass overall attendance trends in the Church. In his study, he tracked the annual attendance of more than 200,000 individual Orthodox Christian churches (the accepted U.S. church universe is 330,000). To determine attendance at the remaining 100,000-plus Orthodox Christian churches, he used statistical models, which included multiplying a church’s membership number by the denomination’s membership-to-attendance ratio.

The Numbers

His findings reveal that the actual rate of church attendance from head counts is less than half of the 40% the pollsters report. Numbers from actual counts of people in Orthodox Christian churches (Catholic, mainline and evangelical) show that in 2004, 17.7% of the […]

One Nun Puts Entire US Intel Community to Shame Over ‘Stage-managed’ Syria Footage

Stephan:  Click through to see the damning photos that support this report. I cannot find anything else about this, no one in the American corporate media has touched it. But it reminds me of the faked photos and testimony in the Kuwait invasion that led America to go in the short war begun by the first President Bush.

The US intelligence community has been put to shame by the dedication and determination of a lone Christian nun. Her modest study of the videos of the Syrian chemical attack shows they were productions involving staged bodies.

Those who take the time to read the report by Mother Agnes and the International Support Team for Mussalaha in Syria (ISTEAMS) will realize that it disgraces the entire US intelligence community for endorsing video footage that is clearly dubious and not credible upon careful study by even a layperson.

No one denies that chemical weapons were used. The US federal government and the mainstream media in the US and countries allied to it have been playing a dirty game of equating the a) rejection of accusations that the Syrian government used chemical weapons with b) an outright denial that chemical weapons were used. The two are deliberately being mixed together to confuse the general public. The question is who used the chemical weapons?

Bottled Water Found to Contain Over 24 000 Chemicals, Including Endocrine Disruptors

Stephan:  There are many reasons why bottled water is a bad idea, this is one you may not be aware of.

Widespread consumer demand for plastic products that are free of the hormone-disrupting chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) has led to some significant positive changes in the way that food, beverage and water containers are manufactured. But a new study out of Germany has found that thousands of other potentially harmful chemicals are still leeching from plastic products into food and beverages, including an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) known as di(2-ethylhexyl) fumarate, or DEHF, that is completely unregulated.

Martin Wagner and his colleague, Jorg Oehlmann, from the Goethe University Frankfurt, in conjunction with a team of researchers from the German Federal Institute of Hydrology, learned this after conducting tests on 18 different bottled water products to look for the presence of EDCs. Using an advanced combination of bioassay work and high-resolution mass spectrometry, the team identified some 24,520 different chemicals present in the tested water.

But of major concern, and the apparent underpinning of the study’s findings, was DEHF, a plasticizer chemical that is used to make plastic bottles more flexible. According to reports, DEHF was clearly identified in the tested water as the most consistent and obvious culprit causing anti-estrogenic activity. Despite trace amounts of more than 24,000 other potentially damaging chemicals, DEHF stood out […]

Americans’ Belief That Gov’t Is Too Powerful at Record Level

Stephan:  This is part of the growing trend describing the increasing disaffection Americans feel for their government. This is dangerous stuff for a democracy, and it is a measure of the problem that both the White House and the Congress don't seem to be paying much attention.

PRINCETON, NJ — Six in 10 Americans (60%) believe the federal government has too much power, one percentage point above the previous high recorded in September 2010. At least half of Americans since 2005 have said the government has too much power. Thirty-two percent now say the government has the right amount of power. Few say it has too little power.

Trend: Americans’ Perceptions of Governmental Power

These most recent data come from Gallup’s Governance survey, conducted Sept. 5-8. The 7% who feel the government has too little power has been mostly steady since Gallup started tracking the measure regularly in 2002.

Republicans and Democrats Divided on Views of Government

This new high encompasses Republicans (81%), who are now more likely than at any time since 2002 to say the government has too much power, and Democrats (38%), who now are more likely to say this than at any time since President Barack Obama took office in 2009.

Republicans, Democrats, and independents have each grown more likely to say government is too powerful this year. However, Republicans’ and Democrats’ views have generally become more polarized since Obama took office. In 2002, the two parties were about equally likely to view the federal government as too […]
