Two in three of those born today are likely to develop cancer, experts have warned, after drawing up stark new scientific forecasts. (emphasis added)
The estimates from Cancer Research UK suggest over half of adults born since 1960 can expect to suffer the disease in their lifetime, with study authors warning that the figure will rise in future generations.
Experts said the new statistic – replacing previous estimates of one in three – is the most accurate forecast to date.
Much of the rise is explained by increasing life expectancy, and the fact that cancer is much more common in old age. However, researchers warned that around one third of the increase is fuelled by lifestyle factors such as alcohol, smoking, rising obesity and changes in child-bearing […]
Yes, all of the things you mention are unhealthy and can be linked to cancer. But surprisingly you didn’t mention the public water filled with pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, fluoride and other unhealthy things. And there was no mention of GMO’s, which are clearly linked to tumors (see French study with mice from last year). And perhaps most importantly there was no mention of the Wifi throughout our daily lives (they ARE microwaves after all), which is an obvious concern – even though Wifi is necessary in our way of life. I was just surprised that these things weren’t mentioned since you were so thorough in the area of self-responsibility issues that contribute to cancer.
Alarming. Thanks for posting, Stephan.
Let’s add to the mix the number of new environmental toxins that our parents and grandparents never experienced. Children are also growing up in a violent, less stable economy. Yes, there have been wars and poor economies before, but childhood trauma as known through the ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences Survey) coupled with all the other things mentioned make for a perfect cocktail for serious diseases later in life. The stress of poverty on both a young mom and baby/child lasts a lifetime and sadly, expresses in serious health and behavioral conditions later in life.
Our country’s failed childcare care policy is disgraceful. In 1970, the Congress voted unanimously to create “universal pre-school” for the USA. After campaigning for this, President Nixon vetoed it (Pat Buchanan whispering in his ear).
As I’m sure you know as father and grandfather, the first 5 years of a child’s life determines 95% of his/her brain capacity for the rest of their life. Without a rich environment for this developmental phase, maladaptive behaviors are developed that last a lifetime.
Great source: James Heckman, PhD, University of Chicago, pre-eminent scholar in early childhood education, Nobel Laureate in Economics. For every dollar invested in early childhood education, there is a $7 to $10 ROI in terms of less sickness, less burden to family and society, less incarceration AND, a child goes on to be a tax-paying citizen who is much less likely to become ill.
The Chinese government is acting on this information that is documented in longitudinal studies by Dr. Heckman’s group and published in Science.
Again, kudos to President Obama for at least putting it on the table recently. If one studied his campaign platform in 2007, he wrote extensively about this issue.
