Climate change: why the Guardian is putting threat to Earth front and centre

Stephan:  I think this is really good news. The Guardian, which is part of the Guardian Media Group is, in my estimation, the most intelligent, fact based, and balanced newspaper in the English language. The Guardian Media Group  is wholly owned by Scott Trust Limited, a foundation not a corporation.  The trust exists solely to secure the financial and editorial independence of  The Guardian in perpetuity. There is no other newspaper like it in the world.

Journalism tends to be a rear-view mirror. We prefer to deal with what has happened, not what lies ahead. We favour what is exceptional and in full view over what is ordinary and hidden.

Famously, as a tribe, we are more interested in the man who bites a dog than the other way round. But even when a dog does plant its teeth in a man, there is at least something new to report, even if it is not very remarkable or important.

There may be other extraordinary and significant things happening – but they may be occurring too slowly or invisibly for the impatient tick-tock of the newsroom or to snatch the attention of a harassed reader on the way to work.

What is even more complex: there may be things that have yet to happen – stuff that cannot even be described as news on the grounds that news is stuff that has already happened. If it is not yet news – if it […]

White US children will be minorities by 2020 after immigrant ‘baby boom’, Census reveals

Stephan:  Climate change is just one of the massive transitions facing us. As this report lays out very quickly we are becoming a majority minority population. Existentially, this is going to mean that being born White will no longer confer privilege. I had a conversation with a Black friend a few weeks ago, and we got to talking about Ferguson, and he  said to me "No man my color reaches adulthood, who grows up in a city, without unpleasant experiences involving the police." And as he said it, I saw the chasm that is normally invisible. My experience was just the opposite. Here is a picture of the shifting demographics of the United States. This is a huge deal, in my mind one of the great meta-trends. It helps explain why racism has risen so prominently into our consciousness, and it is one of the reasons why fundamentalist movements like the Quiverfull Christians emphasize high birth rates. This is also what is going to doom the Republican Party, and they know it, which is why they are working so fervently at voter suppression and gerrymandering. We are going to be facing both climate change and this demographic shift in the same time range. That is why, as a presentiment effect, fear is both so widespread, and so easily manipulated.

  • By year 2020, 50.2percent of children will be minorities
  • By year 2033, Americans 65 years and older will outnumber children
  • By year 2044, 50.3percent of all Americans will be minorities

White children will be outnumbered by minority kids in the United States in just five years, new Census Bureau projections reveal.

This is the result of an ongoing trend of declining birth among white Americans and a baby boom among immigrant groups, as well as a surge in immigration.

By the year 2020, 50.2percent of all children in the US are expected to be non-white, according to the Census. By 2044, whites will be outnumbered by minorities.

The Census study, released this week, predicts that by year 2060, nearly 20percent of the population will be foreign born – thanks to an influx of 64million new immigrants.

The populations of Hispanics in the US will rise 114percent – from 55million in 2014 to 63.6million in 2060 – making up about 29percent of the population.

And the number of non-Hispanic whites will actually likely to decline over the next 40 years – from 200million and 62percent of the population now to 182million and 44percent of the population in 2060.

The number […]

What’s the True Impact of the Alternative Economy? Researchers Decide It’s Time to Find Out

Stephan:  Here is some good and interesting news about the emerging thriving community trend, and the new economic model that is emerging from it.

It is increasingly apparent that today’s economy is not working for most of us. Growing inequality of wealth and income is putting the famous American middle class in danger of becoming a distant memory. Most American children now face economic prospects worse than their parents enjoyed. We suffer from more frequent financial shocks and linger in recession far longer than in the past. Our education and health care systems don’t stack up to those of other countries with similar living standards. And if all this were not enough, environmental destruction continues to escalate as we stand on the verge of triggering irreversible, and perhaps cataclysmic, climate change.

One key lesson that emerges about these innovations is the importance of good, old-fashioned, face-to-face relationships.

Yet, beneath […]

Sign the pledge: Don’t buy these Koch products

Stephan:  In my view Koch Industries is an evil conglomerate. I say this because over and over they make it clear that short term profit trumps any consideration of wellbeing, from individuals to planetary, and because they actively seek to subvert efforts to deal responsibly with climate change and pollution. Please sign the petition and, do not buy products from any of these brands. Vote with your pocketbook. It makes a difference.

Ferguson shows how a police force can turn into a plundering ‘collection agency’

Stephan:  Coming on top of the stories now coming out about the Chicago Police Department, and other departments around the country it is clear that law enforcement in the U.S. in all too many departments has gone seriously off the rails. Ferguson police seem to be nothing more than a protection racket of White bullies whose purpose is to misuse the law to produce revenue from the African American community. And that doesn't even address the racism, which is clearly out of control. The entire department as well as the judges and prosecutors, who also seem to be completely corrupted should be removed from office and replaced by people who actually take seriously their job to  "serve and protect" the community. It will be interesting to see what actually happens.

Of all the harrowing stories buried inside the Justice Department’s report on the Ferguson Police Department, one of the most illustrative begins with an illegally parked car. The year was 2007. And a Ferguson officer who noticed the illegally parked vehicle issued its driver, an African American woman, two citations and a ticket for $151.

To the driver, who had bounced in and out of homelessness, the fine was draconian. She couldn’t pay it in full. So over the next seven years, the woman missed several deadlines and court dates. That tacked on more fees, more payment deadlines, more charges. She ultimately spent six days in jail. All because she didn’t park her car correctly. As of December 2014, the woman had paid the city of Ferguson $550 resulting from a $151 ticket. And she still owes $541.

The Ferguson police and courts system has come […]
