It is increasingly apparent that today’s economy is not working for most of us. Growing inequality of wealth and income is putting the famous American middle class in danger of becoming a distant memory. Most American children now face economic prospects worse than their parents enjoyed. We suffer from more frequent financial shocks and linger in recession far longer than in the past. Our education and health care systems don’t stack up to those of other countries with similar living standards. And if all this were not enough, environmental destruction continues to escalate as we stand on the verge of triggering irreversible, and perhaps cataclysmic, climate change.
One key lesson that emerges about these innovations is the importance of good, old-fashioned, face-to-face relationships.
Yet, beneath […]

Stephan: In my view Koch Industries is an evil conglomerate. I say this because over and over they make it clear that short term profit trumps any consideration of wellbeing, from individuals to planetary, and because they actively seek to subvert efforts to deal responsibly with climate change and pollution. Please sign the petition and, do not buy products from any of these brands. Vote with your pocketbook. It makes a difference.
Koch industries and its subsidiaries are expansive—their holdings include everything from gas stations to pipelines, paper products for everyday use, greeting cards, chemicals used to make materials, and the fabric that makes your clothing.
With an interest in almost everything and status as the number two privately held company in the country–behind Cargill—Koch industries is a behemoth that is hard to avoid.
But knowledge is power and your dollar is your vote. We can become informed purchasers and refuse to support their political agenda by refusing to purchase their wares.
The internet is a wonderful place, full of handy resources. Start by memorizing and avoiding the brand logos listed, which are commonly found throughout our daily lives. Download the Buycott app on your phone and use it while you shop. Buycott has an interesting connection to the netroots you can read about here.
Do some research. Visit Koch industries, Invista, and Georgia-Pacific to see their broad range of products for home, business, construction, clothing manufacturing, farming materials, and chemical additives. They are into almost everything—including […]

Stephan: Coming on top of the stories now coming out about the Chicago Police Department, and other departments around the country it is clear that law enforcement in the U.S. in all too many departments has gone seriously off the rails. Ferguson police seem to be nothing more than a protection racket of White bullies whose purpose is to misuse the law to produce revenue from the African American community. And that doesn't even address the racism, which is clearly out of control.
The entire department as well as the judges and prosecutors, who also seem to be completely corrupted should be removed from office and replaced by people who actually take seriously their job to "serve and protect" the community. It will be interesting to see what actually happens.

Of all the harrowing stories buried inside the Justice Department’s report on the Ferguson Police Department, one of the most illustrative begins with an illegally parked car. The year was 2007. And a Ferguson officer who noticed the illegally parked vehicle issued its driver, an African American woman, two citations and a ticket for $151.
To the driver, who had bounced in and out of homelessness, the fine was draconian. She couldn’t pay it in full. So over the next seven years, the woman missed several deadlines and court dates. That tacked on more fees, more payment deadlines, more charges. She ultimately spent six days in jail. All because she didn’t park her car correctly. As of December 2014, the woman had paid the city of Ferguson $550 resulting from a $151 ticket. And she still owes $541.
The Ferguson police and courts system has come […]
