Stephan: Here are some home truths about what wealth inequity really means. This disparity is destroying our culture but we don't seem to have the political will to do anything about it.

Psst … want to earn a CEO’s hourly wage? You can. You’ll just have to toil for about five weeks to do it, without a single day off.
According to the latest annual survey by the Economic Policy Institute, a progressive think tank, CEOs at the 350 largest companies in the country pocketed an average of $16.3m in compensation […]

Stephan: There are so many facets to the Coming White Minority Trend. For the first time in 700 years being born White will no longer confer privilege. The damage we are doing to ourselves as a profit above all society, paralleled by the rise of the Asian nations, when combined with the decline in the Caucasian birthrate, as this report explains, will result in the U.S. becoming a majority minority society. As a country we will also be a smaller player on the world stage and, as a result of our bad choices, less developed -- no high speed rail for example. Taken altogether this represents a huge existential transition and is one of the reasons people with overactive right amygdalas are so driven by fear.

It is going to be a very different world.

Racial and ethic minorities children under the age of five are now the majority as non-Hispanic white children make up an ever-smaller slice of the population, according to the Census Bureau.
New population estimates released Thursday reveal a striking shift in the composition of America’s population as racial and ethnic minority births are also outpacing minority deaths.
Meanwhile non-Hispanic whites are experiencing negative population growth, seeing 61,841 more deaths than births between 2013 and 2014.
The Census reports that in the past decade, the population has become more diverse, with the percentage of ethic and racial minorities growing from 32.9 percent to 37.9 percent over the last decade.
Indeed, the report notes that Millennials — now representing more than a quarter of the population, more than the 75.4 million Baby Boomers — are more diverse than earlier generations as 44.2 percent belong to a minority group.
With the nation as a whole barreling toward a minority-majority future, there are already states where racial and ethnic minorities actually make up the majority. Specifically there are […]

Stephan: This is how we look to the rest of the world. Equal justice for all. Really? We're being scolded by the world for our cynical unethical justice.

The Council of Europe, the self-proclaimed “democratic conscience of Greater Europe,” urged the United States on Tuesday to allow NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden to return home and make the case that his actions had positive effects.
The call for Snowden to be allowed a “public interest defense” — something not available to whistleblowers charged under the Espionage Act of 1917, as Snowden has been — was part of a resolution to improve international protections for whistleblowers passed overwhelmingly by the 47-nation council’s parliamentary assembly at its meeting in Strasbourg, France.
After the vote, Snowden spoke to the assembly by video from Moscow, where he has temporary asylum. “It would be committing a crime by discussing your defense,” Snowden said of his current legal prospects if he returned to the U.S.
“I think it’s incredibly strong,” he said of the council’s resolution. “It’s a major step forward. … If you can’t mount a full and effective defense — make the case that you […]

Stephan: Norway is a wellness-oriented nation, and it is reflected in everything from the box of clothing and bedding every mother receives on the birth of her child to this, a bee highway. Do you think Omaha is planning a bee highway? Why aren't they?
Bees are threatened all over the world, and planting flowers is one easy way to help them.

The city of Oslo now has what it’s calling a bee highway — a path of flowering plants designed to keep bees well-fed as they pass through the urban area. Supporters hope that initiatives like this one can help protect bees — one third of Norway’s native bee species are now endangered — and by extension protect the crops that rely on bees for pollination.
The idea is pretty simple: The Oslo Garden Society has placed flowerpots full of bee-friendly plants on roofs and balconies throughout the city, creating a route for bees to travel through without starving. A Web site shows locals where more flower coverage is needed and encourages them to plant more.
“The idea is to create a route through the city with enough feeding […]

Stephan: Ronlyn and I quit shopping at Whole Foods several years ago as the result of an earlier scandal. There just seem to be ethical issues with this company. In contrast Costco and Trader Joe's, where we do shop, seem to be becoming both more ethical and more life-affirming.

After paying a settlement in California, the chain is now under fire in NYC
Turns out there might be a reason Whole Foods is not America’s favorite grocery store.
New York City investigators have launched a probe of the chain after finding that local stores have regularly overcharged shoppers over the last five years, according to a report by the Daily News.
The investigation comes just a year after Whole Foods had to pay an $800,000 settlement in California because inspectors found the chain caused customers to overpay for food that was priced by weight.
In New York, consumer protection agents say they found violations that included inaccurate weight labels on pre-packaged food and adding tax to non-taxable items.
“Our inspectors told me it was the worst case of overcharges that they’ve ever seen,” New York City Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Julie Menin told the News.
A spokesman told the News the chain never intentionally mispriced items, and other industry representatives have pointed out that mislabeling is often […]
