Stephan:   I am increasingly concerned that our foreign policy establishment is recreating the Cold War. It is just like the build up to the invasion of Iraq.  The corporate media seem to lack any interest in probing beneath the official line, but if one follows the academic work, and talks with people who have regular involvement with both Russia and the U.S. and speaks from data it is clear what is going on. Stephen Cohen in my opinion is one of the wisest heads when it comes to this the relationship between these two countries. He is  a rational honest man. I met him several times during the years I was involved with the Soviet Union and, then, Russia, and have always thought he was a very impressive analyst. What he says, I think, is dead on. We are manufacturing a crisis.

Last week I had the honor of interviewing Stephen F. Cohen, Professor Emeritus of Russian Studies and Politics at NYU and Princeton University, where for many years he was director of its Russian Studies program. Professor Cohen, a long-time friend of Mikhail Gorbachev, is one of the most important Russia scholars in the world and a member of the founding board of directors of the American Committee for East-West Accord, a pro-detente organization that seeks rethinking and public discussion of U.S. policy toward Russia.

Despite his impressive credentials and intimate knowledge of Russia and its history, you will rarely hear Cohen’s voice in the mainstream press. And it is not for a lack of trying; his views, and those of others like him, are simply shut out of the media, which, along with almost every U.S. politician, has decided to vilify Russian and Putin, irrationally equating Putin with such tyrants as Adolf Hitler. As Cohen explains:

    I have been wondering if the US government (the corporate-military-industrial Plutocracy) is trying to start a war with Russia ever since we moved our fracking/oil companies into the Ukraine (with Vise President Biden’s son’s involvement with a company which does fracking, by the way). How stupid can our administration be?????? Mutual destruction is the outcome of undermining Russia’s sovereignty. They will no more accept the US in the Ukraine than we did with Russia’s military in Cuba (or any other near-by country). How much does the government think it will take to provoke a war with Russia?? I do not think it would take much more than we have already done. Do they really want another world war?? I mean it. This is serious.
