Pope Calls on World Youth to Rise Up Against Global Capitalism

Stephan:  Pope Francis is an amazing man. Here is what he said in Paraguay.  The only other person like him on the world stage is the Dalia Lama. They each have an integrity of thought and are fact based, yet each speaks in a spiritual context.  And they are saying much the same thing.

The latest call for a youth uprising against global capitalism came not from grassroots groups, but from the leader of the Catholic Church, who on Sunday gave a rousing speech during which he told a crowd of young people in Paraguay that it is their time to “make a mess.”

The address marked the end of Pope Francis’ week-long pilgrimage to Latin America, during which he also assailed the prevailing economic system as the “dung of the devil,” saying that the systemic “greed for money” is a “subtle dictatorship” that “condemns and enslaves men and women.”

During Sunday’s rally, which was held on the banks of the Paraguay River outside the capital Asunción, the Argentinian pontiff went off-script as he addressed tens of thousands of local youth.

“They wrote a speech for me to give you. But speeches are boring,” Pope Francis said. “Make a mess, but then also help to tidy it up. A mess which gives us a free heart, a mess which gives us solidarity, a mess which […]

How to Disrupt the Military-Industrial-Congressional Complex

Stephan:  Robert Reich's essay on the role of  the military-intelligence-security corporate world's money in politics is, I think, dead-on. President Eisenhower, who probably knew more about this issue than any man of his time, first as a supreme commander and then President, warned us. No heed was paid. It was just too profitable. And then along came  Citizens United and all bets were off.

President Obama is said to be considering an executive order requiring federal contractors to disclose their political spending. He should sign it immediately.

But he should go further and ban all political spending by federal contractors that receive more than half their revenues from government.

Ever since the Supreme Court’s shameful Citizens United decision, big corporations have been funneling large amounts of cash into American politics, often secretly.

Bad enough. But when big government contractors do the funneling, American taxpayers foot the bill twice over: We pay their lobbying and campaign expenses. And when those efforts nab another contract, we pay for stuff we often don’t need.

This is especially true for defense contractors – the biggest federal contractors of all.

A study by St. Louis University political scientist Christopher […]

Stephan:  Here is some good news. At a time when the Rightists are trying to sell the national parks or, at least, stop any new ones from being created, President Obama has gone the opposite direction, as this report describes.

Early Friday, President Obama announced that he will designate three new national monuments, permanently protecting more than one million acres of public lands. He designated pristine wilderness landscapes in Nevada as Basin and Range National Monument, scenic mountains in California as Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, and a fossil-rich site in Texas as Waco Mammoth National Monument.

With these designations, President Obama is adding to the 16 national monuments he has already created with his authority under the Antiquities Act, setting aside “more public lands and waters than any administration in history.” Both Democratic and Republican presidents have used their authority under the law to designate national monuments, many of which have later become some of the country’s most iconic national parks such as the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and Arches National Park.

A diverse array of groups praised the announcement, emphasizing that the new monuments were a response to years of local support and advocacy to permanently protect these sites.

“By creating these three new national […]

Alaska Military Site That Has Fueled Conspiracy Theories Will Be Transferred to Civilian Operators

Stephan:  Several times each year for as long as I have been publishing SR I get an email from a reader asking me about HAARP. Am I aware of it? Do I know it is a mind control system or one used for weather manipulating? It's a conspiracy legend right up there with chem-trails. Well here's what's happening to it. I know there are some who are going to say, "How gullible can you be, Stephan, that's just a cover story." People like to cling to their myths. It defines who they are.

It’s been a suspected death beam, a secret tool to control the weather and even a weapon to manipulate the human mind. Now, the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program, better known by its acronym, HAARP, has reached the final stage of its strange journey that began with Cold War concerns about nuclear war: Next month, the Alaska-based research station will be transferred to civilian control.

HAARP will be handed over in August to the University of Alaska, confirmed Othana Zuch, an Air Force spokesperson. A ceremony for the handover is also scheduled for that month.

“The Air Force Research Lab has control of the HAARP facility until Aug. 11,” Marmian Grimes, a university of spokesperson, wrote in an email to The Intercept. “After that, the university will have access to the site under the terms of an agreement between [University of Alaska Fairbanks] and the Air Force. That agreement allows access for two years, which will provide the university and the Air Force time to negotiate an agreement regarding the transfer of the […]

NC Republican reveals his ‘primary mission’ as congressman: ‘We’re here as emissaries for Christ’

Stephan:  The first temptation is to laugh. But I take this as serious stuff. This man is no more, nor no less, a religious zealot than a 16th century Inquisitor. And it is important to remember he was voted into office by like-minded people in North Carolina. He is part of the Neo-medievalism Trend that has taken root in the U.S. and, of course, a Republican.

A North Carolina Republican told a religious gathering that his “primary mission” as a congressman was to promote the Gospel of Christ.

Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-NC) appeared last week alongside Reps. Trent Franks (R-AZ) and Louie Gohmert (R-TX) at the weeklong “Celebrate America” revival meeting in Washington, D.C., reported Right Wing Watch.

“The most important message that needs to be heard in this city is the Gospel and love of Christ,” Pittenger said. “This transforms lives.”

The congressman said he understood that recent “court rulings and unsettledness” had been painful to American Christians, but he urged them to promote their religious views to political rivals.

“I don’t hold fault with those who believe different from me – they just don’t know my savior,” Pittenger said. “They don’t know the one who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Pittenger said his chief priority as an elected official was to promote Christianity to voters and other lawmakers.

“That’s my primary mission as a member of Congress,” […]
