How US Evangelicals Helped Create Russia’s Anti-Gay Movement

Stephan:  The Theocratic Right are not just spreading hate and poison in the U.S. They have also pushed themselves and their views into other countries, indeed, Evangelicals are in many cases the only Americans non-Americans know. This report is about Russia, but I could just as easily have done the story about say Uganda. What I find particularly interesting is that no one in media seems to ever ask Evangelicals: "what actual evidence do you have about any of your claims, beyond quoting a couple of verses from the Bible?" Nor have they asked: "Why are you so obsessed with what people do with their genitals?" And, "Why does that trump loving relationships?"

putin_rainbowIn November 2010, Russia’s Sanctity of Motherhood organization kicked off its first-ever national conference. The theme, according to its organizers, was urgent: solving “the crisis of traditional family values” in a modernizing Russia. The day opened with a sextet leading 1,000 swaying attendees in a prayer. Some made the sign of the cross, others bowed or raised their arms to the sky before settling into the plush red and gold seats of the conference hall at Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral.

On the second morning of the conference, the only American in attendance, a tall, collected man, stepped up for his speech. Larry Jacobs, vice president of the Rockford, Illinois-based World Congress of Families (WCF), an umbrella organization for the US religious right’s heavy hitters, told the audience that American evangelicals had a 40-year track record of “defending life and family” and they hoped to be “true allies” in Russia’s traditional values crusade.

The gathering marked the beginning of the family values fervor that has swept Russia in recent years. Warning that low birth rates are […]

Roy Moore’s lawyer to Gov. Bentley: ‘Public officials are ministers of God’

Stephan:  Here we can see the naked self-righteousness and sense of persecution of the Theocratic Right. That this report is about an attorney working for the Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court demonstrates the toxic hate and sexual dysfunction that are the hallmarks of this minority and shows how this view has invaded Alabama's judicial system. Read the letter, it is quite amazing coming from an attorney on the public payroll.

In harsh words and a lecturing tone, a lawyer who works for Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore has written a letter seemingly directed at Gov. Robert Bentley rebuking him for saying Alabama will obey the U.S. Supreme Court ruling declaring same-sex marriage legal.

While the letter from attorney Win Johnson never calls Bentley by name or title, a spokeswoman for Bentley said the letter was directed at the governor.

“Public official, what will you do?  Will you stand up for […]

Captive virgins, polygamy and sex slaves: What marriage would look like if we actually followed the Bible

Stephan:  There is a strange paradox in the Theocratic Right between their claim to believe in the inerrancy of the Bible and the fact that they don't seem to know, or even care very much what the Bible actually says. I have debated Evangelicals several times and in each instance this has been brought forcibly to my attention. Corporate media people don't seem to know what the Bible says either, because they never call Theocratic Rightists on the outrageous things they say. Since marriage equality has been much in the news here is just one example of what I mean, taking marriage as the subject.

Bible believers are beside themselves about the prospect that marriage norms and laws are changing, but let me tell you a secret about Bible believers that I know because I was one. Most don’t actually read their Bibles.

If they did, they would know that the biblical model of sex and marriage has little to do with the one they so loudly defend. Sex in the Bible includes rape, incest, master-slave sexual relations, captive virgins, and more. Of course, just because a story is told in the Bible doesn’t mean it is intended as a model for moral behavior. Does God forbid or command the behavior? Is it punished or rewarded?  In the New Testament stories, does Jesus change the rules or leave them alone?  By these criteria, the Bible not only describes many forms of sexual relationships (including sexually coercive relationships), it gives them the divine thumbs up.

Not One Man, One Woman

The God of the Bible explicitly endorses polygamy and sexual slavery and coerced marriage of young virgins along with monogamy. In fact, he endorses all three to the point of providing detailed regulations. Based on stories of sex and marriage that […]

A Dutch city is giving money away to test the “basic income” theory

Stephan:  We are beginning to see in the Scandanavian countries, the Netherlands, and a few other places, a conscious decision to develop social policy on the basis of wellness as the first priority. In every case so far these life-affirming policies have produced superior social outcomes. Now, as this story describes, Utrecht is assaulting one of the bastions of conservative economics by  providing a guaranteed basic income. I will follow this closely, and predict that the dire warnings advanced by Theocratic Rightists about providing a guaranteed income will prove no more correct than the Rightist predictions about ending Marijuana prohibition or permitting same-sex marriage.

Utrecht

Some people in the Dutch city of Utrecht might soon get a windfall of extra cash, as part of a daring new experiment with the idea of “basic income.”

Basic income is an unconditional and regular payment meant to provide enough money to cover a person’s basic living cost. In January of 2016, the fourth largest city in the Netherlands and its partner, the University of Utrecht, will create several different regimes for its welfare recipients and test them.
A group of people already receiving welfare will get monthly checks ranging from around €900 ($1,000) for an adult to €1,300 ($1,450) for a couple or family per month. Out of the estimated 300 people participating, a group of at least 50 people will receive the unconditional basic income and won’t be subject to any regulation, so even if they get a job or find another source of income, they will still get their disbursement, explained Nienke Horst, a project manager for the Utrecht city government. There […]

Study Ranks States by Level of Corruption. The More Corrupt the State, The More Police & Prisons

Stephan:  The more corrupt the state, the more police and prisons. And which states do you think are the most corrupt? Red value states. How did you guess? Every time there is a study on something like this — corruption, police and prisons, in this case —  it is so clear that Red value social policies always produce inferior outcomes.
corrupt-by-stateAs state lawmakers attempt to balance wasteful budgets, perhaps the first issue they should tackle is corruption in their own ranks. A pioneering study shows that public officials’ corruption costs taxpayers tens of billions of dollars a year. It also shows that law enforcement and prisons get a major boost in more corrupt states.

“The study demonstrates that corruption goes hand-in-hand with excessive state spending. In the 10 most corrupt states, simply reducing corruption to an average level would lower annual state spending by $1,308 per person — or 5.2 percent of state expenditures.”

Unsurprisingly, the South leads the pack in the most corrupt states, with Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and Florida appearing in the top ten. Alaska (Bridge to Nowhere, anyone?) shares the spotlight.

The northwest states of Oregon and Washington top the list of least corrupt states.
