Two years ago, a group of international researchers led by University of Queensland’s John Cook surveyed 12,000 abstracts of peer-reviewed papers on climate change since the 1990s. Out of the 4,000 papers that took a position one way or another on the causes of global warming, 97 percent of them were in agreement: Humans are the primary cause. By putting a number on the scientific consensus, the study provided everyone from President Barack Obama to comedian John Oliver with a tidy talking point.
That talking point put climate deniers in a bind. They have successfully delayed political action for years by making it seem like there’s still a scientific debate over anthropogenic warming. But when confronted with a statistic like this one, they have been forced to take a different tack: dispute the statistic itself.
They’re the 97 percent truthers, and Texas Senator Ted Cruz is leading the recent charge. At a hearing in early October, the GOP presidential candidate peppered Sierra Club President Aaron Mair with questions for ten minutes about the so-called 18-year […]
The 97% claim is an example of the propaganda technique of the bandwagon effect. Carbon Crazies are unable to deal with the fact that there hasn’t been any warming for 17 years.
Steve, since there has been no global warming, please explain the cause of the rapid melting of Greenland’s glaciers, the disappearance of numerous glaciers in our own Glacier National Park, and the massive melting and calving of the ice sheet in Antarctica. During my visits to Glacier National Park, I have personally confirmed the disappearance of many of the park’s glaciers. I hope we can address this problem before our coastal cities, such as Miami, experience even more flooding from ocean encroachment.

(By the way, Stephan, you mean The 19th century “Know Nothings”…)
I don’t understand your comment, Damien. I said 19th century, and the whole point of the story was that the climate truthers don’t accept the science.

A great and hilarious way to inform others about the SCIENTIFIC TRUTH OF GLOBAL WARMING!
Hopefully the canoe will flip on these deniers long before the canoe flips on climate change. What is the latest from polls on how the general population thinks on this topic? We have such bad things happening with the climate everywhere that it has got to be obvious that the planet is in deep doo doo. What does it take? A tsunami to wipe out Florida?
And we just had the worst recorded (most powerful) hurricane in history down Mexico way caused by the ocean warming. The ocean absorbs most of the heat, therefor the climate changes because the air above the ocean changes patterns, too. Fortunately not many were in the path because they were prepared. Stephan , Damien means the similarities to the “Know Nothing” party in the mid 1800’s, I suppose. It was not the “No Nothing” party. C’mon Stephan, you know history better than most of us.
