Scientists are developing graphene solar panels that generate energy when it rains

Stephan:  Here is some more good news about solar. The technology is developing so fast it is hard to keep up. Imagine electricity on cloudy days with rain. The research described in this report was originally published in the journal Angewandte Chemie.

Solar power is making huge strides as a reliable, renewable energy source, but there’s still a lot of untapped potential in terms of the efficiency of photovoltaic cells and what happens at night and during inclement weather. Now a solution has been put forward in the form of producing energy from raindrops.

Key to the new process is graphene: a ‘wonder’ material we’ve heard plenty about before. Because raindrops are not made up of pure water, and contain various salts that split up into positive and negative ions, a team from the Ocean University of China in Qingdao thinks we can harness power via a simple chemical reaction. Specifically, they want to use graphene sheets to separate the positively charged ions in rain (including sodium, calcium, and ammonium) and in turn generate electricity.

Early tests, using slightly salty water to simulate rain, have been promising: the researchers were able to generate hundreds of microvolts and achieve a respectable 6.53 percent solar-to-electric conversion efficiency from their customised solar panel.

For the experiment, the team used […]

Federal Court Affirms Constitutional Rights of Kids in Landmark Climate Case

Stephan:  Here is some quite lovely news. I'm not quite sure what it's impact will be; it has certainly been ignored by the corporate media. But it establishes a precedent, and draws a line. Good will come of it.  It is a wonderful example of the 8 Laws. Judge Coffin’s Order can be read in its entirely at:  http://ourchildrenstrust.org/sites/default/files/16.04.08.OrderDenyingMTD.pdf

EUGENE, OREGON — On April 8, 2016, U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Coffin of the federal District Court in Eugene, OR, decided in favor of 21 young Plaintiffs, and Dr. James Hansen on behalf of future generations, in their landmark constitutional climate change case brought against the federal government and the fossil fuel industry. The Court’s ruling is a major victory for the 21 youth Plaintiffs, ages 8-19, from across the U.S. in what Bill McKibben and Naomi Klein call the “most important lawsuit on the planet right now.” These plaintiffs sued the federal government for violating their constitutional rights to life, liberty and property, and their right to essential public trust resources, by permitting, encouraging, and otherwise enabling continued exploitation, production, and combustion of fossil fuels.

Plaintiffs’ attorney Philip Gregory with Cotchett, Pitre, & McCarthy of Burlingame, CA, said:  “This decision is one of the most significant in our nation’s history.  The Court upheld our claims that the federal government intensified the danger to our plaintiffs’ lives, liberty and property. Judge Coffin decided our Complaint will move forward and put climate science squarely in front of the federal courts.  The next step is for the Court to order our government to cease jeopardizing the climate system for present and […]

The Study-Abroad Solution: How to Open the American Mind

Stephan:  I was living in Georgetown, working for National Geographic, and hearing at cocktail parties from White House staffers my age about this extraordinary thing that was about to happen. It was going to be called The Peace Corps. On the 1st of March 1961 President Kennedy signed the act creating The Peace Corps and the next day he went on national television to tell the world about it. Today it is hard to realize the incredible energy around this event, and the idea it represented. We were making progress in America. The world was getting better. And for the 220,000 Americans who have volunteered for the Peace Corp since then, and served in 140 countries, it was a life changing experience. Any veteran will tell you this. The Peace Corps is now, and has been from its inception a living example of the 8 Laws, and it has done more to advance respect and affection for America than any drone strike. Today although it continues its work we hardly hear of the Peace Corps. Media doesn't cover it; and American geo-politicians in office, think tank, and university blinded by the greed of the great War Industry, have failed to learn its lesson: encouraging exchanges such as college in a country other than your own, increases social wellness, and that means peace, at every level. Wellness strategies are cheaper, more efficient, more life-affirming, more effective, and more enduring. And we know how to do them, wellness extending up from the individual, to the family, to the community, to the region, to the nation, to the planet is attainable. It is not a myth, and  here is an excellent essay on one example of what I mean.

In the Internet age, the world feels far smaller than it used to. But many Americans still know little about the rest of the world and may be more detached from it than ever. Such a lack of awareness is, in certain respects, understandable. Once the Cold War ended, some 25 years ago, Congress, perhaps out of a false sense of security, cut the foreign affairs budget, which led to the closing of some U.S. overseas posts. The news media, especially the commercial television networks, took their cue and began to reduce overseas coverage—responding, they said, to the decline of public interest in such matters, which conveniently coincided with their own economic woes. Although the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq stimulated renewed attention to international events, that phenomenon proved short-lived. Consequently, as new global challenges have arisen in recent years, American discourse on world affairs has lacked historical context or deeper understanding. It has become difficult to […]

Well Regulated: Inside an Indiana Militia

Stephan:  I have said it before, but it bears saying again. The White "Patriot" self-appointed militias are far more likely to affect your life than a Muslim terrorist. And it is a fast growing movement. This may sound hard to believe but 36% of Americans believe the current administration is "secretly trying to take everyone's guns away," and 44% of Republicans believe that armed rebellion "might be necessary." The same poll found 18% of Democrats and 27% of independents agreed it could be necessary. This is a major factor in the Great Schism Trend.

David Nantz carefully pushed aside a grouping of bare branches at the tree line of Echo Lake Park, then stood still. He listened for movement, playing the role of the enemy attempting to infiltrate a base that had been forged by his men.

It was Sunday, training day, and the Indiana Volunteer Militia, one of the largest militias in the state, was practicing how to set up a patrol base and establish perimeter security. Their mission was to fashion a few shelters and secure the base before Nantz made entry.

In a real world scenario, Nantz said, when the grid goes down, you have to know how to protect yourself and your family.

Recent high-profile standoffs with federal law enforcement agencies in Nevada and Oregon, as well as a controversial appearance by a militia group during the police brutality protests last year in Ferguson following the shooting of Michael Brown, has soured the word “militia” in the mouths of many Americans.

But the militia movement is growing. According to a study published by the Southern Poverty Law Center in […]

Beauty Secrets of the Spies

Stephan:  This is how deep into civil society go the roots of the Security State. I think this is very scary stuff for several reasons.

clearista-1Skincential Sciences, a company with an innovative line of cosmetic products marketed as a way to erase blemishes and soften skin, has caught the attention of beauty bloggers on YouTube, Oprah’s lifestyle magazine, and celebrity skin care professionals. Documents obtained by The Intercept reveal that the firm has also attracted interest and funding from In-Q-Tel, the venture capital arm of the Central Intelligence Agency.

The previously undisclosed relationship with the CIA might come as some surprise to a visitor to the website of Clearista, the main product line of Skincential Sciences, which boasts of a “formula so you can feel confident and beautiful in your skin’s most natural state.”

Though the public-facing side of the company touts a range of skin care products, Skincential Sciences developed a patented technology that removes a thin outer layer of the skin, revealing unique biomarkers that can be used for a variety of diagnostic tests, including DNA collection.

Skincential Science’s noninvasive procedure, described on the Clearista website as “painless,” is said to require only water, a special detergent, and a few brushes against […]
