PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia police say the parent of a 4-year-old girl who was killed inside a home in the Kensington section of the city has confessed to accidentally shooting her.
It happened around 2:30 p.m. Saturday inside a home along the 200 block of East Mayfield Street.
Investigators say the man, who was either the girl’s father or stepfather, told them he was playing with a gun when it went off and struck the girl in the face. She died inside the home.
Police originally said it appeared that the girl had been fatally shot by her 5-year-old sibling and that they were searching for the child’s father or stepfather, who was believed to have owned the gun used.
But authorities say the man, who was not immediately identified, turned himself in Saturday night and admitted he was responsible for shooting the girl.
“After an investigation, (he) admitted to accidentally shooting the victim, and stated that the sibling had nothing to do with it,” Sgt. Eric Gripp said Sunday.

HOUSTON – A 15-year-old girl was in the hospital Saturday after deputy constables said a 42-year-old man shot her at a family barbecue in Spring.
“It was crazy, like you would never expect somebody to bring a gun to a barbecue, or a family gathering at all,” said neighbor Micah Stewart.
Chairs sat in front of the home on Precious Place and Roth Forest Saturday night, with water guns nearby.
“We come around here to get home and there’s two people playing, like they’re having a water gun fight,” said neighbor Rasheed Seals.
But deputy constables said somehow a real gun got in the mix.
“The man went over there to his […]

Two officers are in stable condition, with one requiring surgery, and the suspect is dead following a shooting Saturday at a Walmart in suburban Phoenix, authorities said.
Mitchell Oakley, 24, was killed after opening fire at officers who were responding to a call about a trespasser, Chandler police said. A Walmart employee recognized Oakley as someone who had been ejected from the store in the past and called police around 6:30 a.m., police spokesman Seth Tyler said.
The officers encountered Oakley at the front of the store, just past the greeters’ area.
“As they approached, they were shot multiple times within a matter of seconds. A seemingly routine call turned into a deadly encounter within a split second,” police Chief Sean Duggan said.
The first officer entered the store and was fired upon immediately by the suspect, according to witnesses.
The second officer, who was in close proximity, was also shot but was able to return fire. It is uncertain if the first officer discharged his weapon. Both were wearing bulletproof vests.

Stephan: Heroin addiction is getting a lot of attention recently, probably because it has gone from being a Black inner-city problem to a White suburban and rural problem. The other day I ran a report showing how many people are dying from this scourge. Yet another proof that Republican Nixon's War on Drugs supported by Republicans, Ronald Reagan, and both Bushes, as well as Democrat Bill Clinton is an abject failure. And at least one governor Paul LePage -- a Republican of course -- would just as soon let those who overdose die. Really.
It is a trend that no one in the corporate media will talk about: The party of Everett Dirksen, Edward Brooke, and Theodore Roosevelt has become a moral scum pond, with a leadership that says and does things that literally leave any ethical person stunned with repugnance.
Maine Republican Governor Paul LePage
Maine Gov. Paul LePage has routinely attracted attention for off-color, racist or bizarre public statements.
But in what ranks as one of the most vicious messages ever to accompany a veto, LePage explained Wednesday that he blocked a bill to increase access to a life-saving overdose medication because the people it could save are just going to die later anyway.
“Naloxone does not truly save lives; it merely extends them until the next overdose,” LePage wrote.
It was not the first time LePage had shared such a belief, but attaching it to his veto elevated it to a statement of official policy.
“Creating a situation where an addict has a heroin needle in one hand and a shot of naloxone in the other produces a sense of normalcy and security around heroin use that serves only to perpetuate the cycle of addiction,” he wrote.
While a staggering number of people have died as the result of the heroin […]
