Photo: NASA/JPL-Caltech/UA/JHUAPL In 2014, scientists at NASA announced that the gullies on Mars’ surface — whose discovery in 2000 caused widespread excitement among many who perceived them as evidence of flowing water — were formed by the seasonal freezing of carbon dioxide. Now, two years later, further analysis of data gathered by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) bolsters the case against the structures being formed by flowing liquid water.
Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, examined high-resolution data gathered by the MRO from more than 100 gully sites throughout Mars, and found no mineralogical evidence for water or its by-products. These findings, detailed in a study published in the Geophysical Research Letters, would now allow scientists to narrow their theories about how the Martian gullies form.

The Gulf of Mexico
Federal scientists say a massive die-off is taking place on a coral reef of a national marine sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico.
Steve Gittings, chief scientist with the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, reported this week that federal scientists are studying a large-scale mortality event of unknown cause taking place at the East Flower Garden Bank in Gulf of Mexico.
The reef is part of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, about 100 miles off the coasts of Louisiana and Texas.
Researchers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management are reporting unprecedented numbers of dying corals, sponges, sea urchins, brittle stars, clams and other invertebrates, Gittings said.
He said sport divers discovered dead animals Monday, along with hazy water and patches of white mats coating corals and sponges. The divers alerted nearby federal scientists who were doing annual monitoring work on the same reef.

AARP, the non-profit seniors organization that exists to promote the financial security, pensions and healthcare of those over 50, is secretly funding the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), an organization whose bills have acted against the interests of ordinary Americans, including retirees and their families.
The Center for Media and Democracy has learned that AARP has recently joined ALEC, and that it is a named sponsor of the ALEC annual meeting taking place in Indianapolis, Indiana from July 27-29, 2016.
