Despite taking to Facebook and Twitter to vent their frustrations over the result of the Brexit referendum and US election result, a study found only a third of 18 to 25 year olds actually take action about their concerns. (emphasis added)
While 68 per cent of young adults talk about issues such as animal cruelty and human rights both online and off, 36 per cent took action and even fewer, 23 per cent, have taken to the streets to protest.
The survey of 1,000 18-25 year olds, conducted by Censuswide as part of The Body Shop’s #INOURHANDS campaign, found each week young people think […]
Like it or not, the staying power resides in the mass uprising over Obamacare, off-shoring, and the distribution of income.
Having been worked in professional groups that shape and collect census questions and responses, I tend to believe that relying on one source isn’t ever a complete picture. That said, young people have very little trust, if any at all, in institutions that have been in place for some time. And, altho I disagree in their assessment, I can’t fault their thinking 100%. It will take time and seasoning for their understanding to grow.
However, we need to stay alert, constantly remind ourselves that an organic wave of protest that spans generations is building. It’s my sense that the numbers are growing exponentially. Major media is slow to report and fully understand, they tend to slant their stories to what sells and T et al are the big money makers right now. There are stories being born, ignited and flaring up that will take time to move up to the majors, and that is benefitting them. I search out these stories, read about them hourly, daily.
It’s going to be up to all of us to gather, carry and pour them onto the Internet and anywhere else they might help. It’s by that means, they will be captured, nourished and protected and inspire. That is why we need blogs, like SR to report them.
What also gives me great hope and inspiration (and supports your 8 Principles of Change which I urge your readers to buy), is that most people are insisting that the changes we seek be based on non violence. They are actively training using those tactics and educating others to do the same!
I hear that intelligence agencies tend to go on “multiple sources” so that may be our best strategy going forward. We need to watch both mainstream and fringe sources. In the election the mainstream sources had it all wrong and the fringe sources were closer to reality.
