Stephan: I had no idea that this was such a big issue, but having read the full paper, which is to be found at:
JAMA Oncology I think it might be a good idea if you talked with your physician about this test.
If you haven’t been vaccinated for genital HPV (human papillomavirus) infection, you might want to make an appointment with your doctor, because a new study has found that up to 45 percent of US men could have some type of HPV.
In men, HPV infections rarely show symptoms, and can often clear up on their own, but the study found that 25 percent of men could have the kind of HPV that’s strongly linked to cancer, so this really isn’t something you should ignore.
The team, led by Jasmine Han, chief of gynecologic oncology at the Womack Army Medical Centre in North Carolina, reports that not only do rates of HPV infection seem incredibly high in men, but the rates of vaccination are also worryingly low.
Just 10.7 percent of the men surveyed had been vaccinated against HPV.
“Among men aged 18 to 59 years in the United States, the overall prevalence of genital HPV infection was 45.2 percent,” the team reports.
“The overall genital HPV infection prevalence appears to be widespread among all age groups of men, and the HPV vaccination coverage is low.”
The findings are based on a nationally representative sample of 1,868 men, who took part in the US National Health and […]

Stephan: One of the hallmarks of Fascism is its complete commitment to what the Trump Administration calls "alternative facts," or gaslighting as social media calls it. Yesterday we witnessed what I think was one of the most extraordinary performances I have seen from a White House podium since Ron Ziegler and the Nixon Administration. What do I mean: Blatant lying so stupid that five minutes of checking could prove it was a lie. And thus we come to this story. I have deliberately chosen a non-U.S. publication to make the additional point that this absurd kind of lying has profound international consequences.
One thing is clear: Truth will not be the hallmark of the new administration and all statements made officially from its podiums will have to be tested for accuracy before being accepted. The good news here is that constant and grotesque lying on the part of Trump and his minions combined with their endless attacks on media, will force corporate media to up its game, and to make sure that what it is saying is accurate.
Kellyanne Conway, a woman who has made a career of lying, and saying the most absurd things with a straight face.
If there was one Sunday-morning talk show exchange that describes the new reality for the political media – and for the truth – during the Donald Trump era, this was it.
It was a discussion about White House press secretary Sean Spicer, on his first full day in that job, having taken to the podium and made easily disproved claims about the size of Trump’s inauguration crowd.
“Why put him out there for the very first time, in front of that podium, to utter a provable falsehood?” Meet the Press host Chuck Todd asked Kellyanne Conway, counsellor to the President.
“Don’t be so overly dramatic about it, Chuck. You’re saying it’s a falsehood, and they’re giving – our press secretary, Sean Spicer, gave alternative facts to that. But the point really is … “At this point, a visibly exasperated Todd cut in.
“Wait a minute. Alternative facts? Alternative facts? Four of the five facts he […]

Stephan: Here is an example of the rise of Fascism in the Red Value states. This action in South Dakota puts even the trolls in North Carolina to shame it is so blatant, so corrupt. You would think this sort of thing would be impossible in an American state, but you would be wrong. Do I need to say this is all the work of Republicans? Probably not.

Lawmakers in South Dakota are invoking emergency powers to overturn an anti-corruption law that was passed by a ballot measure during the 2016 election.
The South Dakota Government Accountability and Anti-Corruption Act makes it illegal for lawmakers to receive more than a total of $100 annually from lobbyists in the form of “any compensation, reward, employment, gift, honorarium, beverage, meal, food, or other thing of value made or given directly or indirectly.”
The law, which was passed by a majority of voters in November, immediately
incited panic among state officials and lawmakers. Some resigned from their posts while others cancelled meetings with any groups represented by lobbyists.
Lawmakers who are found guilty of violating the act face $1,000 in fines and up to one year in prison.
According to a statement from the advocacy group Represent South Dakota, lawmakers are now trying to use their “emergency powers to bypass normal check and balances, and repeal America’s first statement Anti-Corruption Act.”
“In an unprecedented maneuver, state lawmakers are planning to declare a state […]

Stephan: If you were so naive as to believe Donald Trump's promise that he would reveal his tax returns, or that he would remove himself from conflicts of interest, then this announcement is going to come as bad news. And it is bad news, because it it confirms that we have entered a Fascist world in which facts and promises are as ephemeral as a fog. Only power matters.
President Donald Trump will not release his tax returns, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Sunday.
In an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Conway described the issue of Trump releasing his taxes as an attempt to re-litigate the presidential campaign, where the Republican New York real estate mogul bucked longstanding tradition by not making his tax returns public.
“The White House response is that he’s not going to release his tax returns,” Conway said.
“We litigated this all through the election. People didn’t care,” Conway said. “They voted for him, and let me make this very clear: Most Americans … are very focused on what their tax returns will look like while President Trump is in office, not what his look like.”
An online petition on the White House website calling for Trump to release his tax returns has surpassed the 100,000 signature goal for a response. And other calls for Trump to make his tax returns public have continued since his election, with critics saying the move would clarify whether he has any foreign conflicts of interest.
