Trump’s tax proposal would push US below Greece on inequality index

Stephan:  The United States has become a kleptocracy, corrupt to a level that would put a banana republic to shame. I really would like to feel sorry for the poor slumps who voted for Republicans and Trump, but the truth is when you are this willfully ignorant you invite exploitation, and have nothing to whine about.

NEW YORK — Donald Trump’s tax reform plans would, if enacted, increase the gap between rich and poor Americans and see the US slip below Greece on a new global index of inequality. (emphasis added)

According to the Commitment to Reducing Inequality (CRI) index, developed by researchers at Oxfam and Development Finance International, the US already distinguishes itself among wealthy countries by doing “very badly” at addressing inequality.

But it would fall a further six places from its ranking of 23rd overall if Trump’s tax reform effort is successful, with the US’s specific rating on tax policies plummeting 33 places from 26th to 59th – just below Peru, Chile and Sri Lanka.

“When you already have countries like Portugal and Slovenia ranking higher than the United States on the overall index, we think that’s a concern considering the wealth of the US,” Paul O’Brien, Oxfam America’s vice-president for policy and campaigns, told […]

Jeff Sessions wants police to take more cash from American citizens

Stephan:  The Attorney General of the United States is a well-established racist fascist, and like all fascists he wants to empower the authoritarian police power structure. I have done a number of articles about civil forfeiture and the thuggery found in all too many American police departments. The Deputy Chief of Police of a major American city once told me that the truth is about 15% of police are heroes, just what you would want an American police officer to be. About 15% are thugs and bullies, and the remaining 60% go with the flow of whomever they are with. One example of the thuggery is civil forfeiture. And now AG Sessions is encouraging it.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday said he’d be issuing a new directive this week aimed at increasing police seizures of cash and property.

“We hope to issue this week a new directive on asset forfeiture — especially for drug traffickers,” Sessions said in his prepared remarks for a speech to the National District Attorney’s Association in Minneapolis. “With care and professionalism, we plan to develop policies to increase forfeitures. No criminal should be allowed to keep the proceeds of their crime. Adoptive forfeitures are appropriate as is sharing with our partners.”

Asset forfeiture is a disputed practice that allows law enforcement officials to permanently take money and goods from individuals suspected of crime. There is little disagreement among lawmakers, authorities and criminal justice reformers that “no criminal should be allowed to keep the proceeds of their crime.” But in many cases, neither a criminal conviction nor even a criminal charge is necessary — under forfeiture laws in most states and […]

In Urban China, Cash Is Rapidly Becoming Obsolete

Stephan:  Reading this story brought on a frisson as I realized another predicted trend had emerged. This is going to spread quickly, watch the number of apps proliferate. More than that it is a wonderful example of change driven not by law or regulation but by the consensual power of collective intention expressed through small daily choices. This is how wellness fostering social change occurs. It's straight out of The 8 Laws.

SHANGHAI — There is an audacious economic phenomenon happening in China.

It has nothing to do with debt, infrastructure spending or the other major economic topics du jour. It has to do with cash — specifically, how China is systematically and rapidly doing away with paper money and coins.

Almost everyone in major Chinese cities is using a smartphone to pay for just about everything. At restaurants, a waiter will ask if you want to use WeChat or Alipay — the two smartphone payment options — before bringing up cash as a third, remote possibility.

Just as startling is how quickly the transition has happened. Only three years ago there would be no question at all, because everyone was still using cash.

“From […]

Tobacco companies tighten hold on Washington under Trump

Stephan:  We are increasingly a kleptocracy with only one social priority: Profit. The Trump administration in its first six months has made this corruption the new normal. Here's one example.

Tobacco companies have moved swiftly to strengthen their grip on Washington politics, ramping up lobbying efforts and securing significant regulatory wins in the first six months of the Trump era.

Day one of Donald Trump’s presidency started with tobacco donations, senior figures have been put in place within the Trump administration who have deep ties to tobacco, and lobbying activity has increased significantly.

“As in so many areas, the promise to drain the swamp has been an extraordinary hypocrisy,” said Senator Richard Blumenthal, who supported anti-tobacco legislation and was one of the US attorneys general to broker a hundred-billion-dollar settlement with tobacco companies in the 1990s. “Many of his appointees have deep commitments to the tobacco industry,” he said.

“Tobacco industry influence in Washington is pervasive, in many different ways,” Blumenthal said. “They have an active presence on the Hill, they meet frequently with administrative agencies, on hugely significant issues such […]

NOAA Erases ‘Human Activity’ From News Release on Soaring Greenhouse Gases

Stephan:  Joseph Goebbels and Joseph Stalin would be proud of the Trump administration. Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin would be appalled at what American government has become.

In a truly shocking news release on its Annual Greenhouse Gas Index, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has erased any reference to “human activity” or fossil fuels. The index monitors the warming influence of greenhouse gases like CO2.

Last year, NOAA’s news release for the index featured the picture of flaring gas from fossil fuel extraction (see top image). The release began by stating, “human activity has increased the direct warming effect of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere by 50 percent above pre-industrial levels during the past 25 years, according to NOAA’s 10th annual Greenhouse Gas Index.”

This year, the news release begins, “NOAA’s Annual Greenhouse Gas Index, which tracks the warming influence of long-lived greenhouse gases, has increased by 40 percent from 1990 to 2016 — with most of that attributable to rising carbon dioxide levels, according to NOAA climate scientists.”

Rather than explaining that human activity is the cause, the agency’s release instead goes on to state that “the role of greenhouse gases on influencing global temperatures is well […]
