Study shows North Atlantic wind farms could power the whole world

Stephan:  [caption id="attachment_35509" align="alignleft" width="300"] Amount of territory required to power the U.S. with solar[/caption] Some months ago I published a story about how small an area would be required to create solar installations that could power the entire U.S.. It was was strikingly small. Now here, in this report, is a statement of what it would take to power the nation with wind.  To me the take away from both of these stories is that whether it is solar, or wind, or some combination of the two, with tidal and geothermal thrown into the mix the capacity to create non-carbon power is already available. The challenge is not technical so much as political.

A new study has found that the North Atlantic ocean has the ideal conditions for wind farms, such as the Block Island Wind Farm that opened up off the coast of Rhode Island last year

Wind is one of the cleanest energy sources available, and the US is sitting next to a gold mine. A new study has found that wind speeds over the oceans could allow offshore turbines to generate far more energy than a land-based wind farm – with the North Atlantic, in particular, theoretically able to provide enough energy for all of human civilization.

In tapping into wind as an energy source, the US has for decades lagged behind Europe and UK, which are home to the largest offshore wind farms in the world, including the London Array and the Netherlands’ Gemini wind farm. But the US is catching up: the country’s first facility opened up off the coast of Rhode Island last year, and if the Trident Winds project goes ahead, it […]

Pruitt Calls For End To Tax Credits For Wind & Solar

Stephan:  Scott Pruitt, head of the EPA, and one of the least attractive zombies in the Trump coven, has never made any secret of his commitment to carbon energy. He was a lobbyist for the coal barons, for heavens sake. Thanks to Trump he is in a position of policy making power now and he is trying to do anything he can to stop, or at least materially slow, non-carbon energy technologies from developing. Here is his latest sabotage.

Scott Pruitt, who plays the role of Darth Vader in Trump’s Evil Empire, told an audience at the Kentucky Farm Bureau on Monday that he is in favor of ending all tax credits for wind and solar power as soon as possible. His statement makes his unwavering allegiance to gospel according to Charles and David Koch apparent for all to see.

“I would do away with these incentives that we give to wind and solar,” he told the assembled multitude. “I’d let them stand on their own and compete against coal and natural gas and other sources, and let utilities make real-time market decisions on those types of things as opposed to being propped up by tax incentives and other types of credits that occur, both in the federal level and state level.”

Fortunately, Pruitt is not in control of federal tax policy, but his words could carry weight with those serving in that august deliberative body. But The Trumpeter, having lost his war on the Affordable Care Act, is now threatening to blow up the US tax code to confer trillions in benefits upon America’s […]

Scott Pruitt and Donald Trump Further Endanger the Planet

Stephan:  Your world, let me say that again, your personal world, is being daily degraded because of Donald Trump and zombies he has appointed or nominated and the Republican congress has approved. If you are not taking this seriously you are condemning your children and their children to a degraded earth where life will be much harder. Here's the story.

On September 20th, in New York, while the United Nations General Assembly was in session, France’s President, Emmanuel Macron, spoke with a group of reporters about how he might persuade President Donald Trump to do something—anything—to address climate change. Efforts to get the United States to remain in the Paris accords had not been going well, Macron said. (Trump had announced his intention to leave, but, as a practical matter, that will take time.) This was largely owing to the fact, Macron added, that what the Trump Administration proposed—namely, to renegotiate the accord—was “something we do not accept.” But Macron, with his technically minded optimism, had a plan. Trump might never like Paris because it was an “Obama deal,” and because he believed that his voters were against it, Macron said, but those same voters were now confronting the reality of climate change in the form of escalating […]

E.P.A. Announces Repeal of Major Obama-Era Carbon Emissions Rule

Stephan:  Here is more detail about what has just been done by the Trump administration to see that your air is more toxic. Scott Pruitt, is one of the principal Trump zombies. I think it is important to keep in mind that he is in office because he was approved by the Republican congress. A congress that knew exactly who he was, and what he was about.

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency announced on Tuesday that Scott Pruitt, the chief of the agency, had signed a measure to repeal President Barack Obama’s signature policy to curb greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, setting up a bitter fight over the future of America’s efforts to tackle global warming.

Mr. Pruitt, who had signaled the move at an event with coal miners in eastern Kentucky on Monday, said in a news release that his predecessors had departed from regulatory norms in writing the Clean Power Plan, which was finalized in 2015 and would have pushed states to move away from coal in favor of sources of electricity that produce fewer carbon emissions.

Describing the Obama-era regulation as the “so-called Clean Power Plan,” the E.P.A. statement said that repealing the measure “will also facilitate the development of U.S. energy resources and reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens associated with the development of those resources.”

The repeal proposal, which will […]

Franklin Graham: School Boards Must Be Run by Evangelical Christians

Stephan:  I got an email from an evangelical reader -- yes about 12% of my readership seems to be theocratic rightists. In it she upbraided me claiming that I was exaggerating when I said her co-religionists were trying to influence the curricula of public schools, or to set policy. So, just to be clear here is Franklin Graham on the record.

Theocracy alert: Christian extremists plot to take over public schools in the U.S.

Franklin Graham says school districts are now controlled by “wicked and evil” gays and lesbians, and must be run by evangelical Christians if America is to avoid God’s wrath.

Speaking with Fox News religion reporter Todd Starnes last week, Graham claimed that “President Obama sold himself completely to the gay and lesbian community,” telling Starnes that Obama is pushing a “dangerous” policy that will allow “sexually perverted people to take advantage of women,” and now states like North Carolina are facing pressure from “a very wicked agenda within the Obama administration.”

Discussing public schools, Graham said:

I want the school boards of America in the hands of evangelical Christians within the next four to six years. And it can happen and that will have a huge impact because so many school districts now are controlled by wicked, evil people, and the gays and lesbians, and I keep bringing their name up, but they are at the forefront of this attack against Christianity in America.

Graham went on to declare that America is now facing a moral 9/11:

The country is imploding. We are seeing a moral implosion. Just like we saw the World […]
