Proof That Tesla’s Batteries Are Utterly Revolutionizing How We Power Our World

Stephan:  Here is some very interesting news about Elon Musk's battery technology. Good news.
Tesla’s Powerwall and Powerpack products have been used to great effect since 2015. Tesla batteries have been used from Puerto Rico and Australia, to the island of Ta’u, and even to luxury resorts in South Africa.

Tesla is getting a lot of use out of its Powerwall and Powerpack products. The company has been selling Tesla Batteries since 2015, and both received major upgrades last year, ensuring that they will continue to be used for a variety of projects.

In recent months, Tesla batteries have been used to power the company’s solar roof productsent to Puerto Rico to provide much-needed electricity, they’ve saved Australia $1.5 million, and will soon power thousands of homes in South Australia. That last application is particularly impressive, as it also accounts for one of the largest projects Tesla has ever taken on; and that was before CEO Elon Musk set a deadline for its completion at 100 days.

As Business Insider points out, however, South Australia and Puerto Rico aren’t the only places that have come to utilize the company’s batteries. In fact, several luxury resorts, a handful of […]

Researchers Find “Executioner Protein” That Causes Cancer Cells to Self-Destruct Without Hurting Healthy Cells

Stephan:  Here is what looks like exciting and excellent news about cancer therapies.

Scientists have discovered a way to use the “executioner protein” BAX to induce apoptosis in cancer cells while leaving healthy cells intact. The treatment has so far been applied only to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells but may have broader uses.

KILLING CANCER WITH APOPTOSIS

Albert Einstein College of Medicine scientists have induced cancer cells to commit suicide with a new compound that leaves healthy cells untouched. They deployed their novel treatment approach against acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells, which kill more than 10,000 Americans, and makes up about one-third of all new cases of leukemia, each year. Patients survive AML at a rate of only about 30 percent, making effective new treatments a hot commodity. And although the team has only tested the treatment on AML, it could have the potential to successfully attack other varieties of cancer cells.

“We’re hopeful that the targeted compounds we’re developing will prove more effective than current anti-cancer therapies by directly causing cancer cells to self-destruct,” […]

Scientists Somehow Just Discovered a New System of Vessels in Our Brains

Stephan:  The brain is perhaps the most studied organ in the world, and yet there is still so much we have yet to learn. Here's an example of what I mean.

Credit: Daniel Reich/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

You are now among the first people to see the brain’s lymphatic system. The vessels in the photo above transport fluid that is likely crucial to metabolic and inflammatory processes. Until now, no one knew for sure that they existed. (emphasis added)

Doctors practicing today have been taught that there are no lymphatic vessels inside the skull. Those deep-purple vessels were seen for the first time in images published this week by researchers at the U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

In the rest of the body, the lymphatic system collects and drains the fluid that bathes our cells, in the process exporting their waste. It also serves as a conduit for immune cells, which go out into the body looking for adversaries and learning how to distinguish self from other, and then travel back to lymph nodes and organs through lymphatic vessels.

So how was it even conceivable that this process wasn’t happening in our brains?

Senior investigator Daniel Reich trained as both a […]

Melania Is Exploiting Puerto Rico For Money Just Like Donald Exploited The NFL Controversy

Stephan:  There literally seems to be no level of vulgar scumbaggery to which the Trump family will not sink. They are living examplars of Ayn Rand's philosophy: Greed is good, grab what you can screw everyone else. When I first read this story on another website I thought it was satire, thinking it couldn't possibly be true. It's couldn't possibly be legal. Unfortunately it's true, and based on the response of the Republican congress and the Department of Justice it reveals once again that the Republican Party is the apotheosis of political corruption and untrammeled greed.

This vampiric clan of Trump seems dedicated to the proposition that “the family that preys together stays together,” and prey they do — on us.  Rachel Maddow effectively demystified Donald Trump’s NFL tweetfest by revealing on “The Tonight Show” a few days ago that Trump had a fundraising campaign through his PAC asking for donations if you agreed with his NFL stance, i.e., if the emotional trigger of listening to Trump’s dog whistle of telling the black men their place was enough to make you take out your wallet and donate.

Now Melania’s doing the same thing, creating a way to make cash out of some pre-existing situation which is a news story. AOL Lifestyle is running a series of ads, disguised as news articles chronicling the fashion exploits of Hurricane Barbi.  Her costume changes are all recorded and everything she wears is for sale. Now her questionable taste in wearing stilletos in a hurricane zone is one thing and that’s not the scope of this piece. The fact that what she is actually doing is modelling […]

Trump’s Not a ‘Moron’—He’s a Grifter, and He’s Created an Administration of Grifters

Stephan:  Margaret Carlson expresses my views exactly. I couldn't improve on her essay so I am recommending you read it. In my view we are a country following a course whose only polestar is selfishness and greed.

There’s considerable disagreement in President Donald Trump’s Cabinet over the Iran deal, global warming, help for Puerto Rico, how stupid ardent anti-abortion Republican Rep. Tim Murphy was to text his girlfriend about having an abortion and whether Trump, as his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reportedly put it, is a “moron.”

There is less disagreement over using your public office for private gain, and this is true whether or not you are already wealthy. After all, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin could afford to buy his own Gulfstream. In the new Washington, the rich aren’t rich enough and poor are undeserving until they prove otherwise.

That goes even in a natural disaster. As Puerto Rico was struck by Hurricane Maria, Trump took time out from golfing and tweeting two dozen times about football to question whether the citizens of Puerto Rico were working hard enough to find their own food and water and whether they realized they would be busting the president’s budget, laugh, laugh. When he finally made landfall five days later he tossed paper towels to the homeless, hungry, and thirsty, a tableau for which you can pick your own metaphor: treating them like dogs fetching a treat, dolphins jumping for […]
