Social identity threat and religion in the US

Stephan:  In my view this is one of the reasons people vote Republican. First, Christianity in the U.S. was captured by a Christofascist cult promulgated largely by radio  and TV preachers, and the super churches they created. Then this cult made a Faustian bargain with the uber-rich, who poured in money, and captured the Republican Party driving out the moderate Rockefeller, Everett Dirksen Republicans who played such an important and ethical role in Watergate. As I have said the universals of all fundamentalist religions are: 1) A sense of self-righteous superiority; 2) a sense of persecution by "others"; 3) a conviction of male dominance; and, 4) an obsessive need to control females. And so, in Third World states like Alabama, we have candidates like Roy Moore Citation: Michael H. Pasek, Jonathan E. When people feel targeted because of their religious identity, they can experience a psychological threat that may undermine psychological well-being and increase prejudice toward other groups, according to a new study by Penn State psychologists.

The findings, which appear online in the journal of Social Psychological and Personality Science, suggest that in the United States, highly religious Protestants and religious minorities — Jews and Muslims — feel the most targeted for their religious group membership and religious beliefs. This perception, which the researchers term “religious threat,” leads people to feel socially isolated, be less comfortable sharing their religion with others and to be more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes towards others.

“American society is in a downward spiral of interreligious intolerance,” said Michael Pasek, a doctoral student in social psychology and the lead investigator on the research. “When people see their religion or religious beliefs mocked in the public domain or criticized by political leaders, these experiences signal to members of entire religious groups that they don’t belong.”

The first large study examining social identity threat […]

Why are America’s farmers killing themselves in record numbers?

Stephan:  A study released by Newsweek reported that the suicide death rate for farmers was more than double that of military veterans, which is already significantly higher than for the American population generally. I don't know how many claxons need to blare before we pay attention. Here is yet another one.

It is dark in the workshop, but what light there is streams in patches through the windows. Cobwebs coat the wrenches, the cans of spray paint and the rungs of an old wooden chair where Matt Peters used to sit. A stereo plays country music, left on by the renter who now uses the shop.

“It smells so good in here,” I say. “Like …”

“Men, working,” finishes Ginnie Peters.

We inhale. “Yes.”

Ginnie pauses at the desk where she found her husband Matt’s letter on the night he died.

“My dearest love,” it began, and continued for pages. “I have torment in my head.”

On the morning of his last day, 12 May 2011, Matt stood in the kitchen of their farmhouse.

“I can’t think,” he told Ginnie. “I feel paralyzed.”

It was planting season, and stress was high. Matt worried about the weather and worked around the clock to get his crop in the ground on time. He hadn’t slept in three nights and was struggling to make decisions.

“I remember thinking ‘I wish I […]

Theological scholar explains horrifying reason Trump’s supporters celebrated Armageddon in Pensacola

Stephan:  Are you actively expecting the Battle of Armageddon? Probably not. But the Christofascist pre-millennial dispensationalist fundamentalist world is obsessed with the idea of end times. That's why they support Israel, and are so keen to see Trump make Jerusalem the capitol of Israel by moving the American embassy there. They want the chaos and battle that is occurring, want it to get worse, much worse. The rest of the world thinks this is one of the stupidest geopolitical moves in memory, and I agree. But then I'm not expecting to see Jesus descending from the clouds.

In a Pensacola, Florida rally Friday evening, Republican state Senator Doug Broxson suggested to supporters of Donald Trump that the president’s controversial decision to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem may usher in the biblical end times.

“Now, I don’t know about you, but when I heard about Jerusalem — where the King of Kings [applause] where our soon coming King is coming back to Jerusalem, it is because President Trump declared Jerusalem to be capital of Israel,” Broxson predicted. The crowd cheered.

This week, theological scholar Dr. Diana Butler Bass wrote a Twitter thread explaining the link between recognition of Jerusalem, evangelical Christians, and the apocalypse. That is important because rebuilding the Temple is the event that will spark the events of the Book of Revelation and the End Times.”

According to Bass, the counsel of evangelical adviser that Trump surrounds himself with take such “End Times” prophecies literally

“Of all the possible theological dog-whistles to his evangelical base, this is the […]

Canola oil may worsen memory

Stephan:  DON'T USE CANOLA OIL. That's pretty much the bottom line.

Credit: Amazon.com

Canola oil is regularly promoted as a healthful cooking fat. A new study, however, suggests that it could be more harmful than helpful — particularly for the brain.

Senior study investigator Dr. Domenico Praticò, of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and colleagues recently reported their results in the journal Scientific Reports.

Canola oil is a type of vegetable oil that comes from rapeseed, or Brassica napus, which is a yellow flowering plant that belongs to the cabbage family.

The very first commercially consumable form of canola oil was developed by Canadian researchersin the 1970s. Unlike some forms of rapeseed oil, canola oil is low in erucic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid that some research has linked to cardiovascular problems and

Here’s a picture of Clarence Thomas’s wife giving an award to James O’Keefe in Trump’s hotel today

Stephan:  I never thought Clarence Thomas should have been confirmed as an  Associate Justice. He had neither the intelligence, nor the integrity for the job, and then there was the molestation thing. Oh, and did I mention he is and his wife have remained blatantly political, even though he is on the bench. When I read this story I could hardly believe it. It is despicable.

Ginni Thomas, wife of Associate Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, giving well-known slimebag James O’Keefe an award.

You remember James O’Keefe? He’s the law-breaking, fake news-generating POS who most recently was busted trying to discredit Roy Moore’s sexual molestation accusers by planting an easily discreditable story with a legitimate news organization. Well, his own organization decided to give him an award today because of course they did. And who presented him with his award? None other than Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s wife, Virginia Thomas. Yay!

As another right-wing looney tune shows, there are all kinds of “luminaries” at the Project Veritas award show.
