White people should be more afraid of other whites than they are of people of color

Stephan:  Trump of course is a compulsive manipulative liar, and nothing he says can be taken at face value, so all his statements you should know are lies. One of his bird calls is about how you should fear immigrants, Hispanics, and Muslims. Well let's deal with some facts, even though they will not go down well with the gun junkies and Trumpers. You have much more to fear from a conservative Christian White guy than you do from a Black or Hispanic, or a Muslim. Data is data. "Overall, white Americans who live in predominantly white and Trump-voting counties are 50% more likely to die from murder, gun violence and drug overdoses than whites who live in the most diverse and Democratic-voting counties. The more white and Republican a county is, the greater the risk for white Americans."

President Trump would have us believe that white Americans are endangered by immigrant drug dealers and gangsters, and the liberal politicians who abet them with so-called sanctuary cities.

At a recent rally in Ohio, Trump used lurid language to claim that gang members “slice and dice” beautiful girls like “animals.” Last week, his administration strengthened its crackdown on sanctuary jurisdictions, announcing a new policy that requires local governments to either cooperate with federal immigration agents or lose funding.

It’s obvious to anyone who’s listening that when Trump talks about this terrifying other he’s really talking about non-white people, not just any old foreigner; and indeed, Trump supporters in surveys conflate their fears of immigrants and dark-skinned people.

These fears, however, are not founded in reality. White people should be […]

Neo-Nazis Are Infiltrating the US Armed Forces

Stephan:  The Neo-nazis are following the model of the christofascists and infiltrating the Armed Forces. This has long term and very alarming implications.

This story was co-published with Frontline.

It was Oct. 29, 2017, when Ed Beck decided he had to contact the military police.

For weeks, Beck had been tracking the online life of a 21-year-old lance corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. He said he had concluded the young man, a North Carolina native named Vasillios Pistolis, was deeply involved in neo-Nazi and white supremacist activities.

Beck said he had compiled an exhaustive dossier on the young Marine, tracing the evolution of Pistolis’ racist worldview over recent years and linking him to violent altercations at the bloody white power rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last August. The most recent piece of evidence, Beck said, was a fresh video that appeared to show Pistolis standing alongside a leader of the Traditionalist Worker Party, a fascist group, during a confrontation with an interracial couple at a restaurant in a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee.

Beck was well-positioned both to be offended by Pistolis’ alleged conduct and to report it: Beck had served in the Marines from 2002 through 2006, including […]

Of course US birth rates are falling – this is a harsh place to have a family

Stephan:  You would think there were so many alarms bells ringing that we would finally begin talking about how to change our priorities and make wellbeing the first priority. The United States is no longer a very nice place to have children and have a family, and the social outcome data confirms this statement, as an objectively verifiable fact. Here is one aspect of the story. Please note this story is appearing in a British publication, so there are geopolitical implications as well.

America’s birth rate has fallen to a 30-year low.

The US is one of only four countries in the world with no government-subsidized maternity leave while 36% of the workforce are contract laborers with no access to benefits.

America’s birth rate has fallen to a 30-year low, let the hand-wringing and finger-pointing begin. It’s those selfish women, wanting careers before kids! Or, gasp, not wanting kids at all! It’s all those abortions! It’s Obama’s fault!

The reality is, for all its pro-family rhetoric, the US is a remarkably harsh place for families, and particularly for mothers. It’s a well-known fact, but one that bears repeating in this context, that the US is one of only four countries in the world with no government-subsidized maternity leave.  (emphasis added) The other three are Lesotho, Swaziland, and Papua New Guinea, countries that the US doesn’t tend to view as its peer group.

This fact is met with shrugs from those who assume that companies provide maternity leave. Only 56% do, and of those, just 6% offer […]

ICE Caught Lying in Court, Judge is Furious

Stephan:  A friend, the Deputy Chief of Police of one of America's largest cities, once told me at a meeting that fifteen per cent of police are heroes, everything a society could ask for. That fifteen per cent were to one degree or another thugs and bullies. The other seventy per cent went with the flow. There is a corollary to this I think: Whomever hires these men and women can bias the selection. And we can see that on the basis of data not partisanship. As time goes on under the Trump administration it has become clear that ICE members were selected from the thuggery side of the spectrum. Here's one of the reasons I say that.

Last year, ICE agents tried to strip Daniel Ramirez Medina of his DACA status by claiming he was “gang affiliated” due to a tattoo of his birthplace.

The facts of Ramirez’s case are extremely disturbing. In February 2017, shortly after President Donald Trump unleashed immigration agents to amp up arrests and deportations, ICE agents went to Ramirez’s father’s house in Seattle to arrest him. (The father is undocumented, and brought Ramirez to the U.S. illegally as a child.) While there, they encountered Ramirez and asked him whether he was “legally here.” He responded that he was—a truthful statement given his DACA status, which he had renewed the previous May. Yet ICE officers detained him anyway. They took him to a processing center, where, once again, he told them that he had work permit.

“It doesn’t matter,” an agent responded, […]

All 34 of Chile’s Catholic bishops resign in fallout from huge child sex abuse scandal

Stephan:  I have been following the child abuse sex scandal in Chile for some months, but there has been so much going on here that it just hasn't made it to publication. But this is astonishing.

Pope Francis speaks at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, in Santiago on January 17, 2018.

All 34 of Chile’s Catholic bishops have submitted their written resignations to the Vatican in the latest fallout from a major child sex abuse scandal rocking the South American nation.

The unprecedented move puts the bishops’ fate in the hands of Pope Francis, who can either accept the resignations or reject them. The clerics announced their decision to resign en masse at a Vatican news conference on Friday.

“Thank you to the victims, for their perseverance and their bravery, despite the enormous personal spiritual, social, and family difficulties they’ve had to face so many times, amidst the incomprehension and the attacks from the ecclesial community itself,” the bishops wrote in their resignation letter.

The breadth and global magnitude of the Catholic Church’s ongoing child […]
