Despite a growing movement to end the practice of isolating humans in tiny cells for hours and days on end, prisoners are still held in solitary confinement in prisons and jails across the United States — including children. Consider Palm Beach, Florida, where a class-action lawsuit filed in a federal district court last week on behalf of three teenage boys held in the county jail is challenging the practice of placing children in solitary confinement with disturbing allegations against the local sheriff’s department and school board.
According to a complaint filed by human rights lawyers this month, boys aged 16 and 17 are held in solitary confinement at the Palm Beach County Jail for 23 or 24 hours a day, sometimes for weeks and even months on end. I just bought some free range eggs laid by hens that have 108 square feet of pasture for each in their flock. A solitary prison cell is 80 square feet. Space allocation for asylum seeking kids is as low as 40 square feet.
What happens to a country that loses it’s heart? Where does it go?
Who or what will save us from what this country is becoming?
I don’t imagine the angels or the e.t.’s will be showing up to save us from our selves. Greed, arrogance, fear and righteousness have destroyed many civilizations after living too well for too long. Now it appears to be our turn as we take the rest of world down with us.
Except there appears a wave of young, vital intelligent people male and female, particularly female who are rising to lead change that we all need. Maybe a trend that will over time renew our national life.
