Extreme heat has smashed temperature records around the country and around the world in the past week alone.
But if we fail to significantly curb emissions of carbon pollution — the path set forth by President Trump’s climate policies — then these severe and deadly heatwaves will become the normal summer weather over the next few decades.
Typical five-day heat waves in the U.S. will be 12°F warmer by mid-century alone, according to the U.S. National Climate Assessment (NCA), which the White House itself reviewed and approved last November.
You do understand that if by some magic we could turn off the industrial systems tomorrow we would still be in for many of these future temperature changes. The carbon is in the atmosphere and as it gets hotter methane will become more prevalent which has many times more heat trapping capacity.
So we humans had better burrow in and apply ourselves to restoring the natural systems and creatures that have made this one of the garden planets of the universe. We have these big brains that can accomplish wonders and there is no planet B to decamp to, forget Mars it died long ago.
I do indeed understand that which is why I focus so much attention o this issue. Every day that the U.S. fails to begin to take climate change seriously is a day that our children and their children will suffer a little more, and the rest of the world, given the size of our economy, will come to loathe us.
