A new study finds voter ID laws don’t reduce voter fraud — or voter turnout

Stephan:  Here is some actual data on the effect of stricter voter ID laws. It is not what you would expect. And in its own way it is good news. I believe the outcome is the result of the stimulation of more voting in response to suppression efforts.

Strict voter ID laws, now on the books in 10 states, have gotten a lot of attention over the past several years. Supporters argue that they’re necessary to stop voter fraud, particularly voter impersonation. But critics argue that the laws, by restricting voting, make it harder for minority voters in particular to cast a ballot.

But a new study suggests that the laws, which require certain IDs to vote, may do neither.

The study, from Enrico Cantoni at the University of Bologna and Vincent Pons at Harvard Business School, found that voter ID laws don’t decrease voter turnout, including that of minority voters. Nor do they have a detectable effect on voter fraud — which is extremely rare in the US, anyway.

The implication: Despite the legal and political battles over voter ID laws, they don’t really seem to do much of anything.

The researchers caution that their results “should be interpreted with caution” and that they “do not see our results as the last word on this matter — quite the opposite.” Still, the findings join a growing body of research that suggests […]

Supreme Court Limits Civil Asset Forfeiture, Rules Excessive Fines Apply To States

Stephan:  Here is the latest on civil forfeiture, and it is good news.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously Wednsesday that the Constitution’s ban on excessive fines applies to state and local governments, thus limiting their ability to use fines to raise revenue.

The court’s decision, written by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was announced by her on her second day back at the court. Ginsburg missed in-person arguments at the court for the first time in her quarter century on the Supreme Court bench after undergoing surgery for lung cancer late last year.

The court’s opinion came in the case of Tyson Timbs, whose $42,000 Land Rover was seized by the state of Indiana after he was arrested for selling a small amount of heroin to undercover cops for $400.

An Indiana trial court ruled that the fine was grossly disproportionate punishment on top of other fines and a year of house detention. The state Supreme […]

China Is Reportedly Building a Solar Power Station in Space

Stephan:  The Trump administration is trying to keep the coal industry alive. China is trying to beam solar energy from space satellites to earth. Which nation do you think will be preeminent in this century.

China’s Academy of Space Technology is working on an orbital power plant that would capture solar energy in space and beam it back to Earth.

The plant would be able to harness solar power even when it’s cloudy back on Earth, since its photovoltaic array would be floating high above any terrestrial weather.

With plans to launch a test facility before 2025, pursuing space-based clean energy shows that China is committed to its ongoing push towards using more renewable energy and asserting its place among global leaders in space.

Beam Me Down

Needless to say, the biggest problem for a floating power plant is figuring out how to get the energy back down to Earth.

The scientists behind the project are still sorting that part out.

But right now, the plan is to have solar arrays in space capture light from the sun and then beam electricity down to a facility on Earth in the form of a microwave or a laser, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

From there, the electricity could be used just as if it had been generated by conventional, terrestrial means.

Big Plans

If the launch goes well and the energy-transmitting beam works like it’s supposed to, the Chinese scientists have plans to test […]

These Are The Richest Families In The World For 2018

Stephan:  I had two readers write me today asking basically the same thing: You make such an issue of Neofeudalism, who are the richest families in the world? I had done research on the richest individuals, but not families, so I went looking. Here is what I found. Could you write a check today for $400 without stress? How about $1,000? How about $10,000? How about $100,000?  How about a million? Ten million? Well, these are families that could write a check for a billion and hardly notice. This is what Neoliberalism has created. I think it is obscene.

We’re a culture that fetishises wealth and glorifies the rich. Those in the world of business that find themselves in the upper echelon are just as much a business leader as they are celebrity to the public gaze. But however much we adore the wealthy, it’s wealthy families that hold all the appeal.

Family business is no drill and the staggering fortunes that accumulate in the bloodline can also make for a lot of pressure. But unlike wealthy individuals who seem to espouse impersonal business success or serve as the face behind a monolithic corporation, all of us have a family. Family business seems to imply values of authenticity, tradition, lineage and quality and at the end of the day, a wealthy family is as close to Royalty as we can get without flying to Buckingham Palace.

Here are the 10 wealthiest families in the world.

1. The Walton Family (Wal-Mart)
Estimated Wealth: $208.2 to $239.8 Billion AUD

Considering that Wal-Mart is a retail behemoth, it’s no shock that the Waltons should be America’s […]

Trump blocks back pay for government contractors who lost wages during shutdown

Stephan:  Trump's shutdown of the government is ancient history now, media and public attention has moved on. For the people impacted by it, however, misery continues to abound. There is a basic scumminess to Trump that is truly amazing. I can think of no previous president who even approaches his level. This report makes the point.

President Trump, who has an extensive track record of stiffing contractors who worked for his company, blocked a measure that would have given back pay to federal contractors who lost five weeks of wages during the last month’s extended government shutdown.

While hundreds of thousands of federal workers received back pay for the wages they missed during the longest shutdown in American history, employees of federal contractors were barred from working and are not entitled to back pay.

Democratic negotiators pushed to include back pay for as many as 580,000 federal contractors in the spending deal that would give Trump more than $1.3 billion toward a border fence but were rebuffed by the president.

“I’ve been told the president won’t sign that,” Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., told reporters Wednesday, according to NBC News. “I guess federal contractors are different in his view than federal employees.”

The measure would have been the first ever to give back pay to contractors, who did not receive back pay after previous shutdowns.

A Trump administration official argued to HuffPost that the cost of giving back […]
