Stephan: Listening to the news today I realized that we have gone beyond satire to tragedy. One of America's two parties, The Republicans, has reached a level of ignorance, incompetence, heartlessness, and spinlessness such that almost every action they take, the things they say, the positions they advocate are destructive of the nation's democracy and wellbeing.
Today's edition of SR is made up of just a portion of the news reports I have seen about Republican statements and actions on a single day. Meanwhile, according to fivethirtyeight, Donald Trump has the approval of 41.8% of Americans. Why is that do you think?
Cheer up. We are on the cusp of great changes Trump cannot touch. He wins when we are tragedy-fixated. There is no tragedy even in the Bard. I can out Dostoevsky Dostoevsky for negativity but it is silly as he finally confessed through Alyosha. The solution is to believe what you actually know. Do not wee this as criticism. You are among the smartest soul I have ever encountered. The changes? People waking up and taking control and building their own communities. Affirmations including I US and WE. Things you believe in. The defeat of binary thinking.
It’s because 41.8% of people in the USA think just like he does. You can’t even discuss the issues with them because they get angry. Maybe in the long run it will be a good thing.
It will be a catharsis for them when they see the terrible results of Trump’s agenda- if we survive it.
Stephen, have you watched the video from Amanpour and Company with Frank Luntz, the Republican strategist? He literally wept re: the lack of a future we have as a united nation…it still sticks with me as I (and many others I know) keep witnessing this visceral anger. It is frightening.

Thanks, Sue, I hadn’t seen it but will look it up.
Thank you Susan for that link to the Luntz interview. Very powerful and very sad, and he and his kind have a lot of responsibility for bring us to where we are.
My sister is a trumper resentful and angry about those who don’t pull their own weight. want something for nothing and oh those law-breakers who are not properly punished. Did I mention she hated, hated Obama and we never talk politics. Since my circle of contacts seldom includes trumpers I go to place like yahoo news comments to get their pov’s. They don’t much related to facts that don’t arise from the gut. Scary because even if our proto-Mussolini disappears tomorrow enough have a focus and passion that will not lead to compromise.
Here in NC we are starting to hear about a wealthy businessman who donated many millions to the state republican party in return for certain considerations. I am betting that this will be seen as a liberal political assault on god’s people and will make little difference to those who vote republican. I am sure our country is on an accelerating downhill slid that will either bring the end or the renewal of the USA within the next 5+ years. I sent Beto $20 the other day. Quickly a message came back “a $35 additional donation will get a bumper sticker”…sigh.
