‘Superbugs’ Could Kill 10 Million Annually Without Urgent Action, Warns New Report

Stephan:  We face this crisis because of the short-term greed of the pharmaceutical industry and their relentless flogging of the products for animal, fowl, or fish husbandry. Here is what that has bought us.

A new report on antimicrobial resistance calls for greater action by stakeholders at all levels lest so-called “superbugs” claim 10 million lives a year.

“There is no time to wait,” says the report, released Monday by the U.N. Interagency Coordination Group (IACG) on Antimicrobial Resistance.

“Unless the world acts urgently, antimicrobial resistance will have disastrous impact within a generation,” IACG says.

The threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is already deadly, with 700,000 people dying each year as a result of drug-resistant diseases.

There is also problem of inequity and lack of affordable access, which the report links to the deaths of “nearly 6 million people annually, including a million children who die of preventable sepsis and pneumonia.”

Fast forward to 2050, the report adds, and AMR could cause as many as 10 million deaths each year under a worst case scenario.

Beyond claiming lives, says IACG, unchecked AMR would also unleash economic damage on the order of “the shocks experienced during the 2008-2009 global financial crisis as a […]

Maine becomes 1st state to ban single-use foam containers

Stephan:  Here is some good news from Maine. If enough states would do this, polystyrene foam containers would not be economically viable and would cease to be used.

Polystyrene foam soup containers are stacked in a New York restaurant. Maine is banning single-use food and drink containers made from polystyrene foam. Democratic Gov. Janet Mills signed the bill into law Tuesday, April 30, 2019; environmental advocates say that makes Maine the first state to ban disposable foam food containers. Supporters say the law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, 2021, will reduce litter in the state’s lakes, rivers and coastal waters.

AUGUSTA, MAINE — Maine has banned single-use food and drink containers made from polystyrene foam, commonly known as Styrofoam, becoming the first state to do so.

Democratic Gov. Janet Mills signed the bill, which takes effect in 2021, into law Tuesday.

Environmental groups have sought such bans amid rising public awareness of throwaway plastic that accumulates in the oceans, but the Natural Resources Council of Maine said that Maine is the first state to enact a ban.

Similar legislation passed Maryland’s Legislature in April, but it’s unclear whether that state’s Republican governor, Larry […]

America’s renewable energy set to surpass coal for the first month ever

Stephan:  Here is some lovely good news. In spite of everything that Trump and the Republicans are doing to keep carbon energy alive at the behest of the party's corporate masters, it isn't working.

California Solar and wind installation

NEW YORK, NEW YORK — America’s clean energy revolution is on the verge of a tipping point.

The renewable energy sector is projected to generate more electricity than coal during the month of April, according to a recent report published by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. That’s never happened before.
Coal, long the king of the power sector, has already been dethroned by natural gas, a much cleaner burning fossil fuel. Now, coal is facing intensifying pressure from wind and solar power.
“Five years ago this never would have been close to happening,” Dennis Wamstead, research analyst at IEEFA, said in an interview. “The transition that’s going on in the electric sector in the United States has been phenomenal.”
Even a decade ago, America’s renewable energy had little presence other than hydro power. But a wave of investment — first into wind, and then solar — has made these […]

‘Biodegradable’ plastic bags survive three years in soil and sea

Stephan:  Stop using plastics, use brown paper bags, use them several times, then tear them into little pieces and use them in a mulch mix, or recycle them.

Plastic bags that claim to be biodegradable were still intact and able to carry shopping three years after being exposed to the natural environment, a study has found.

The research for the first time tested compostable bags, two forms of biodegradable bag and conventional carrier bags after long-term exposure to the sea, air and earth. None of the bags decomposed fully in all environments.

The compostable bag appears to have fared better than the so-called biodegradable bag. The compostable bag sample had completely disappeared after three months in the marine environment but researchers say more work is needed to establish what the breakdown products are and to consider any potential environmental consequences.

After three years the “biodegradable” bags that had been buried in the soil and the sea were able to carry shopping. The compostable bag was present in the soil 27 months after being buried, but when tested with shopping was unable to hold any weight without tearing.

Researchers […]

10 incredibly fake facts Trump supporters believe are true

Stephan:  This may be hard to believe, but I have been checking christofascist sites like Fox, and Daily Caller, and far worse, and this is the reality they peddle. Maybe this is why as of the 30th April, in spite of what has just come out about Barr, and Mueller's letter, accordingly to fivethirtyeight, the average across polls shows Trump with 41.1% approval rating. How can this be? How could any American support what is happening to America under the administration of the worst president in American history. The answer I think is that modern media has made it possible to create a false reality and have millions believe it, particularly when it is reinforced by their fears, hates, and fear of the "other."

Americans, divided and polarized as they are, live in two distinct worlds. In one world, the earth is not flat, climate change is real and Bill and Hillary aren’t pimping kids out in the basement of a pizza restaurant.

The other world is devoid of reason, evidence and pretty much any type of historical facts. Despite the fact that Trump voters have been fleeced by the biggest con man in the world, they continue to devour the lies he sells on a silver platter. When it comes to facts, Trump supporters aren’t head over heels in love with them. After all, Trump’s rise came as a result of playing to uninformed and angry people’s primal and worst sensibilities. They’re right and the entire world is wrong, because that’s what their cult leader told them, and who needs Google anyway?

Here are 10 incredibly fake facts that Trump supporters believe are true.

1. Trump is a devoted Christian.

The thrice-married, pu$$y-grabbing Trump is actually quite the exemplary Christian, at […]
