When it comes to creating waste, no one tops the U.S. And when it comes to recycling waste, well, the U.S. is one of the worst, according to a new analysis by the English risk management firm Verisk Maplecroft.

The numbers for the outsized contribution to the global waste crisis by the U.S. are staggering. The U.S. makes up only four percent of the world’s population, but produces 12 percent of the world’s global waste. By contrast, China and India make up more than 36 percent of the world’s population and produce 27 percent of global municipal solid waste, as The Guardian reported.

On average, each American produces three times as much trash as the global mean. That includes plastics and food waste. In fact, the firm estimates that each American produces […]

The Supreme Court is One Vote Away From Changing How the U.S. is Governed

Stephan:  Our democracy is coming apart in ways great and small. Here is an aspect you may not have considered, one that has profound implications.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh had not yet been confirmed when the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Gundy v. United States; his vote could have changed the outcome.

Had Brett Kavanaugh not been accused of sexual assault, one of the first cases he would have heard as a Supreme Court Justice would have been that of Herman Gundy, a convicted sex offender. When nominated, last July, Kavanaugh was expected to be confirmed in time for the term that started last October. But the emergence of sexual assault allegations against him delayed his confirmation vote until October 6th, just after the Court’s first set of oral arguments—which included Gundy’s request to invalidate his federal conviction for failure to register as a sex offender. In June, the Court denied Gundy’s petition. As it turns out, Kavanaugh’s absence from the case likely changed its outcome.

Gundy v. United States was about the “Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act,” known as sorna, which Congress enacted in 2006. The […]

GOP congressman urges Trump to reject Supreme Court ruling on citizenship question

Stephan:  This is a Republican Representative from Texas. Do I need to say more? This man was elected by his neighbors. He is just that, a representative.

Republican Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX) urged President Donald Trump on Tuesday to ignore the Supreme Court’s decision on a controversial census citizenship question, advising him to print the survey with the question regardless of the court’s ruling.

“It’s the lawyers advising him,” Roy tweeted, evidently referring to the Supreme Court Justices. “[Trump] should ignore them. Completely. Print the Census with the questions — and issue a statement explaining why — ‘because we should.’ Done.”

Roy, a freshman conservative lawmaker whose most famous exploit up until now has been blocking a $19 billion disaster aid package, has been a consistent supporter both of the citizenship question and of Trump’s border wall. He doubled down on his stance later Tuesday night after he was accused by Twitter users of being “lawless.”

“Lawless is the state of our border. Lawless is being ruled by Judges on matters of policy choices,” he wrote. “Lawless is NOT rightly advising the President to […]

American Pride Hits New Low; Few Proud of Political System

Stephan:  Are you proud to be an American? If you are not you are not alone. Here is what The Gallup Organization discovered when they asked that question.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • 45% are “extremely” proud, the second straight year of sub-50% readings
  • 22% of Democrats are extremely proud, down 10 points in one year
  • Americans most proud of U.S. scientific success, military; least proud of politics

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As Americans prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, their pride in the U.S. has hit its lowest point since Gallup’s first measurement in 2001. While 70% of U.S. adults overall say they are proud to be Americans, this includes fewer than half (45%) who are “extremely” proud, marking the second consecutive year that this reading is below the majority level. Democrats continue to lag far behind Republicans in expressing extreme pride in the U.S.

These findings are explored further with new measurements of the public’s pride in eight aspects of U.S. government and society. American scientific achievements, military and culture/arts engender the most pride, while the U.S. political system and health and welfare system garner the least.

Decreasing Percentage in U.S. Are Extremely Proud to Be American

U.S. adults’ extreme pride in being American has been steadily weakening in […]

Inside the Secret Border Patrol Facebook Group Where Agents Joke About Migrant Deaths and Post Sexist Memes

Stephan:  When you read this story I want you to keep a sense of proportion about what the story is saying. Here are the facts: This Facebook group discussed in this article numbers about 9,500 out of a labor force of roughly 20,000. That means that nearly fifty percent of the Border Patrol, a component of the  Customs and Border Protection agency, are racist thugs. That doesn't happen randomly. You create it, and this is what the United States has become as a result. Trump is doing this with strong intention, speaking to the 42.3% of Americans who want and support it. You see the same thing I do on television. As you see those scenes, those desperate people, ask yourself what kind of person would actively create this, and authorize it?

U.S. Border Patrol

The three-year-old group, which has roughly 9,500 members, shared derogatory comments about Latina lawmakers who plan to visit a controversial Texas detention facility on Monday, calling them “scum buckets” and “hoes.”

Members of a secret Facebook group for current and former Border Patrol agents joked about the deaths of migrants, discussed throwing burritos at Latino members of Congress visiting a detention facility in Texas on Monday and posted a vulgar illustration depicting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez engaged in oral sex with a detained migrant, according to screenshots of their postings.

In one exchange, group members responded with indifference and wisecracks to the post of a news story about a 16-year-old Guatemalan migrant who died in May while in custody at a Border Patrol station in Weslaco, Texas. One member posted a GIF of Elmo with the quote, “Oh well.” Another responded with an image and the words “If he dies, he dies.”

Created in August 2016, the Facebook group […]
