What I Would Ask Robert Mueller

Stephan:  James Comey is an insider to these events, this particular branch of Trump criminality. I agree with his questions which, I think, represent the correct approach to the Mueller testimony.  I hope the Democrats know enough to ask simple straightforward questions, just as he lays out here.

If I were a member of Congress with five minutes to question Robert Mueller, I would ask short questions drawn from the report’s executive summaries.

Volume One: Russia

Did you find that there were a series of contacts between the Trump campaign and individuals with ties to the Russian government? (p. 5)

In particular, did you find that a Trump foreign policy adviser learned that the Russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton in the form of thousands of emails? (pp. 5-6)

Did you find that the Trump foreign policy adviser said the Trump campaign had received indications from the Russian government that it could assist the campaign through the anonymous release of information damaging to candidate Clinton? (p. 6)

Did you find that senior members of the Trump campaign met with Russian representatives at Trump Tower after being told in an email that the meeting was part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump? (p. 6)

Did you find that, […]

Trump Administration Circumvents Congress For Food Benefit Cuts (Again)

Stephan:  The sheer nastiness of Trump and the Republican Party always takes my breath away. Hungry children. Really.

The Trump administration is reviving another food benefit cut that Republicans couldn’t get through Congress.

Under a new proposal from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, states would lose some flexibility to set eligibility standards for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ― commonly known as food stamps ― which would push 3 million people out of the program.

“Our job is to make sure folks have the tools they need to move away from SNAP dependency,” Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue told reporters on Monday evening.

Perdue said that food benefits are wasted on wealthy people who should not be eligible.

Why won’t the charter school industry acknowledge its failures?

Stephan:  I consider the entire Charter school movement to be nothing more than a greed trip. What should have happened was an increase in public school funding. But oh, no. The greedheads saw an opportunity to privatize what, for generations, had been a successful publicly funded network of institutions. And thus we have this, and Betsy Devos as Secretary of Education.

News broke recently about what may be the single biggest charter school scam ever in which an online charter school organization is alleged to have bilked the state of California for $80 million by enrolling tens of thousands of students into their programs, often without the students’ knowledge, and charging the state for nonexistent education services and bogus expenses related to operating the schools.

Nationwide, the litany of charter school outrages continues to grow — the Network for Public Education tallied 43 negative reports on charter schools from local and national news outlets in June alone. After a recent report I coauthored with NPE executive director Carol Burris found a federal government grant program had likely wasted as much as $1 billion on charter schools that never opened or were viable for only short periods of time, Burris and her colleagues followed up with yet more research that found $1 billion is likely an underestimate.

New geothermal battery directly converts heat to electricity

Stephan:  Here is some fascinating and very good news about non-carbon energy, and the transition out of the carbon era. As described in this report, "Now researchers at Tokyo Institute of Technology and Sanoh Industrial have developed a new type of battery cell that can directly convert heat energy into electricity." If only we had started to make the shift as Jimmy Carter had tried to make happen when he was president. But the transportation and oil industries were too strong then. The research discussed in this report is to be found in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A.

One of the largest natural sources of renewable energy could be right under our feet – literally. The Earth itself is a big warm ball just waiting for us to tap into it, with vast stores of geothermal energy lying beneath Australia, the United States and plenty of other areas. Now researchers at Tokyo Institute of Technology and Sanoh Industrial have developed a new type of battery cell that can directly convert heat energy into electricity.

Most geothermal systems work using water heated by hot rocks a few kilometers below the Earth’s surface. That water is either naturally present and pumped to the surface, or pumped down, heated and pumped back up. Such systems often need high temperatures, over 180° C (356° F), to work, and don’t necessarily scale up that well.

Alabama governor quietly signs law allowing mega-church a private police force

Stephan:  Christofascists are always working to breach the firewall created by the Founders to separate church and state. And in Alabama it has come to this.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has signed legislation allowing a mega-church to establish its own police force, despite threats of a legal challenge.

The law, which was approved quietly two weeks ago, allows Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham to set-up a private law enforcement department to make arrests when crimes are committed on its properties, according to the Associated Press.

Church officials say the measure is necessary to provide adequate security for the 2,000 students and faculty on its two private school campuses, the AP said.

According to AL.com, Briarwood Presbyterian Church averages 2,800 to 3,600 worshipers per week, making it one of the three biggest churches in Alabama. The church also has Briarwood Christian School, a private K-12 institution, with an enrollment of 1,875 students, and a theological seminary.

Per the website, the officers will have to complete state certified training by the Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission and be trained on the proper use of a non-lethal weapon.
