Trump Administration Urges US Supreme Court to Declare Firing a Worker for Being Gay Is Legal

Stephan:  Yes, this is really happening. This is the position of Trump and his administration; this is America at the end of the second decade of the 21st century.

The Trump administration has just urged the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that firing an employee simply because they are gay is perfectly legal. The request comes in the form of a 34-page amicus brief, which was not required, but voluntary.

The brief, signed by Trump Solicitor General Noel Francisco, tells the Court it is the opinion of the administration’s Dept. of Justice that a “plain text” reading of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 do9es not protect gay people in the workplace from discrimination, including firing for being gay, as The Washington Blade, which was first to report, notes.

“The question here is not whether Title VII should forbid employment discrimination because of sexual orientation, but whether it already does,” the brief says. “The statute’s plain text makes clear that it does not; discrimination because of ‘sex’ forbids treating members of one sex worse than similarly situated members of the other — and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, standing alone, does not result in […]

ICE and Homeland Security busted pushing right-wing propaganda and conspiracy theories

Stephan:  Trump and the Republicans are actively restructuring the federal agencies of government into christofascist White Supremacist institutions. Can this be true? Am I exaggerating? Here is the data. I am beginning to think there may be a risk publishing the data I do in SR. I am already seeing a decrease in readership and an increase in the posting of alt-right loony comments, even as press freedoms are coming under attack from the right. Welcome to America.

Multiple federal departments have been pushing far-right propaganda to federal employees.

“An arm of the Justice Department regularly sent summaries and links to articles from an online white nationalist publication over the last year, a BuzzFeed News investigation has found. In addition, similar newsletters sent to the Labor Department, ICE, HUD and the Department of Homeland Security, included links and content from hyperpartisan and conspiracy-oriented publishers,” BuzzFeed News reported Friday.

“In daily bulletins about media coverage for the department’s Executive Office for Immigration Review, which runs the nation’s immigration courts, a government contractor sometimes included links to VDare, an anti-Semitic and racist site whose editor who has claimed that American culture is under threat from non-white peoples. That contractor, a Dade City, Florida-based company called TechMIS, also compiles newsletters for other agencies including the Department of Labor, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Office of Housing and Urban Development,” BuzzFeed noted.

“Among these publications: the Western […]

A new poll shows what really interests ‘pro-lifers’: controlling women

Stephan:  The anti-abortion movement has never been about protecting babies. If it was the anti-choicers would be fervent advocates for prenatal and post birth childcare policies, and supporters of public education and, of course, they are none of those things. It has always been my view that anti-choice is really about not letting women control their own bodies, and creating and maintaining Abrahamic policies that keep women under control. And here is some of the data that supports that position.

According to self-identified “pro-life” advocates, the fundamental divide between those who want to outlaw abortion and those who want to keep it legal comes down to one question: when does life begin? Anti-abortion advocacy pushes the view that life begins at conception; the name of their movement carefully centers the conceit that opposition to abortion rights is simply about wanting to save human lives.

new poll shows that’s a lie. The “pro-life” movement is fundamentally about misogyny.

A Supermajority/PerryUndem survey released this week divides respondents by their position on abortion, and then tracks their answers to 10 questions on gender equality more generally. On every question, anti-abortion voters were significantly more hostile to gender equity than pro-choice voters.

Do men make better political leaders than women? More than half of anti-abortion voters agreed. Do you want there to be equal numbers of men and women in positions of power in America? Fewer than half […]

The right-wing populist wave is a threat to the climate

Stephan:  Trump as vile as he is, is hardly alone in rejecting science and climate change. It is the general position of racist nativist fascists all over the world, and the implications of that for humanity are frightening.

The Amazon rainforest is on fire — and the consensus is that Brazil’s far-right populist leader, Jair Bolsonaro, is to blame.

Bolsonaro, who took office in January and has been referred to as “Captain Chainsaw,” gutted funding for agencies protecting the massive rainforest, essentially giving wink-and-nudge approval for illegal loggers to do their thing. Fire is used as a tool for clearing Amazon land for ranching, and the more trees are cut down, the more vulnerable the rainforest is to wildfires. There have been almost twice as many fires detected in 2019 so far as there were in the entirety of 2018.

It’s hard to overstate how threatening this policy is to the climate. The Amazon is the world’s largest rainforest: its trees scrub the Earth of a significant amount of CO2 and have captured a huge amount of carbon and methane within their branches and roots. If you lose the trees, a lot of greenhouse gases get released and it becomes harder to […]

Huge Wildfires in the Arctic and Far North Send a Planetary Warning

Stephan:  Science has proven that healthy large forests are one of the keys to healthy planetary climate. And yet, knowing that the U.S., as well as other nations like Brazil, are doing a woefully inadequate job controlling the enormous fires that are consuming large swaths of the planet's forests.  It's not getting much coverage but I want my readers to know what is happening.

Alaska fires now cover 550,000 acres

The planet’s far North is burning. This summer, over 600 wildfires have consumed more than 2.4 million acres of forest across Alaska. Fires are also raging in northern Canada. In Siberia, choking smoke from13 million acres — an area nearly the size of West Virginia — is blanketing towns and cities.

Fires in these places are normal. But, as studies here at the University of Alaska’s International Arctic Research Center show, they are also abnormal.

My colleagues and I are examining the complex relationships between warming climate, increasing fire and shifting patterns of vegetation. Using locally focused climate data and models from the Scenarios Network for Alaska and Arctic Planning, the research group I help coordinate, we are finding evidence that is deeply worrying — not just for those of us who live within the fires’ pall of smoke, but for the world.

Recent fires are too frequent, intense and severe. They are reducing older-growth forest in favor of young vegetation, and pouring more carbon into the atmosphere at a time […]
