Stephan: Today's SR is a bit longer than usual because in the midst of this terrible pandemic the story behind the story of the Trump administration's activities in addressing this crisis needs to be told so it is not lost. I find this entire event almost beyond belief. I don't think that in the history of the United States we have ever had an administration and a Senate of such criminality and incompetence. At a time when the wellbeing of Americans should be the first priority instead all manner of grifting and criminal maneuvering is going on. These reports speak for themselves.

Stephan: One of the standout conclusions of the Covid-19 pandemic is the utter unpreparedness of the Federal government as a result of decisions made earlier by criminal Trump, and the lies he has told as recently as yesterday. As I said in Wednesday's edition, I hope we finally recognize that universal birthright single-payer healthcare with wellbeing as its first priority, not profit, is the only way we are going to get through what is coming. Because be very clear, this isn't going to be the only pandemic the world will face. As climate change proceeds and viruses and bacteria mutate to accommodate what is happening, there will be more pandemics.
The coronavirus disease that was first diagnosed in China’s Hubei province has now spread to at least 47 countries and every continent except Antarctica. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak an international health emergency. President Trump sought to play down the threat from coronavirus and announced Vice President Mike Pence would be his point person to coordinate government efforts to prevent a widespread outbreak. As Trump spoke, a new milestone in the novel coronavirus outbreak was reported, in a possible example of community spread: A person was diagnosed with the virus in Northern California who had not traveled to any of the affected regions of the world, nor had known contact with anyone else who did. We speak with Laurie Garrett, former senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations and a Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer. She is the author of several books, including “Ebola: Story of an Outbreak,” “The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance” and “Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public Health.”

Stephan: To criminal Trump everything is an opportunity for a grift.
I think it’s been pretty clear from the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak that President Trump’s top concern has been American business, rather than public health. He has pinned his re-election hopes on an argument that his leadership has produced the greatest economy in world history, and 2,000-point plunges in the stock market are very off-brand.
