US intelligence warned Trump in January and February as he dismissed coronavirus threat

Stephan:  Trump will never admit it, and the Trumpers don't believe it, but the evidence is clear. This pandemic is much more complicated and dangerous than it needed to be because of the incompetence and ignorance of Trump and his minions. I think it is very important to keep that in the front of our minds as we read and hear news reports as to what is happening.

President Donald Trump ignored reports from US intelligence agencies starting in January that warned of the scale and intensity of the coronavirus outbreak in China, The Washington Post reported Friday.

Citing US officials familiar with the agencies’ reports and warnings, the Post reported that intelligence agencies depicted the nature and global spread of the virus and China’s apparent downplaying of its severity, as well as the potential need for government measures to contain it — while Trump opted to dismiss or simply not address their seriousness.
“Donald Trump may not have been expecting this, but a lot of other people in the government were — they just couldn’t get him to do anything about it,” the official noted to the Post. “The system was blinking red.”
The CIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment to the Post. When asked for comment on the report, White House spokesperson Judd Deere directed CNN to fellow spokesperson […]

DOJ seeks new emergency powers amid coronavirus pandemic

Stephan:  I have been waiting for this. From the christofascist perspective the Coronova virus pandemic must seem a gift. It provides the cover for the further dismantlement of American democracy, and that includes the election. It is my view that there is an increasing probability that the election process is at risk. I think it is very important that a citizen uprising take place; that we demand some kind of online ballet. The financial database programming in this country protects and handles easily billions of individual transactions securely every day. Surely, we can create, test, and implement some adaption of that system in the 9 months before the election.

The Justice Department has quietly asked Congress for the ability to ask chief judges to detain people indefinitely without trial during emergencies — part of a push for new powers that comes as the coronavirus spreads through the United States.

Documents reviewed by POLITICO detail the department’s requests to lawmakers on a host of topics, including the statute of limitations, asylum and the way court hearings are conducted. POLITICO also reviewed and previously reported on documents seeking the authority to extend deadlines on merger reviews and prosecutions.

A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment on the documents.

The move has tapped into a broader fear among civil liberties advocates and Donald Trump’s critics — that the president will use a moment of crisis to push for controversial policy changes. Already, he has cited the pandemic as a reason […]

With Nation Distracted by Public Health and Economic Crises, Trump Moves to Allow GMO Crops in Wildlife Refuges

Stephan:  Don't think for a moment that a pandemic will stop Criminal Trump's scumbaggery on behalf of corporations and the rich. Quite the contrary, it gives him cover because no one is paying attention. Consider this, for example.

As the U.S. faces an unemployment crisis, economic meltdown, and a public health emergency with the coronavirus, the Trump administration moved quietly on Friday to further threaten dozens of endangered species in the southeastern United States by proposing the planting of genetically engineered crops on wild public lands.

The administration proposal this week aims to allow the planting of GE seeds in the 44,000 acres of farmland within the Southeastern Region of the national wildlife refuge system—a reversal of existing policy.

The move would increase the use of glyphosate and other pesticides that have been linked to harmful effects on bees, butterflies, and other pollinators necessary to humans’ food supply, as well as other species that live in the wildlife refuges.

“It’s a no-brainer that this kind of pesticide-intensive agriculture shouldn’t be allowed on public lands that are critical to wildlife conservation and preservation of the unique ecosystems of the southeastern U.S,” […]

Coronavirus deniers and hoaxers persist despite dire warnings, claiming ‘it’s mass hysteria’

Stephan:  [caption id="attachment_51172" align="alignleft" width="300"] Credit: fivethirtyeight[/caption] Three years of constant lying by a presidential administration, supported by endless hours of disinformation, misinformation and outright lies perpetrated by christofascist media to cover up the reckless incompetence of that administration seems to have permanently damaged the psyche of America. You can see it in the rock-solid approval ratings for Criminal Trump no matter what he does or says. He has actually gone up a bit. And you can also see it in denierism of his followers. He told them Covid-19 Coronavirus was a hoax; then that he had it under control; then, when it was clear we were in social meltdown, he said it wasn't his fault, played the racism card to blame the Chinese, and babbled more gibberish and lies from the White House podium. The result is this.

George McCrary a businesses development officer of Baldwin City, Kan., says the media is playing down positive news during the crisis because that’s not “what sells,” he said.

WELLSVILLE, KANSAS — Here in northeast Kansas, in a small town set amid tidy farms and ranches, a Walmart worker named Brandon Crist was growing frustrated with the panic terrorizing the American public. He didn’t understand the need for lockdowns, closing schools, limiting public gatherings and shuttering bars and restaurants. Altering almost all facets of life.

As he often does, Crist found a meme online that amplified his feelings and posted it to his Facebook page.

“Does anyone know anyone who has the coronavirus? Not just heard about them but actually know them,” the meme said in bold white letters on a blue background. “Statistically none of us are sick . . . yet concerts are canceled, […]

Editor’s Note — Behind the Scenes, Beneath the Radar, Republicans are at Work

Stephan:  The electronic media, both television and online with the exception of Fox are, as they should be, focused on helping people weather the Covid-19 pandemic. But out of that spotlight, and under that radar, I am seeing the most amazing stories of grifting, the implementation of policies to benefit the rich and corporations, insider trading, and a general effort to screw ordinary people. And surprise it is almost entirely a Republican effort. I know that sounds very partisan, but it is not. If this were being done by Democrats I would be posting the same stories with different names. There is a difference between partisanship and facts, although that is often deliberately misunderstood or obfuscated. So let's take a look, although this isn't all of it, at some of the stories that have caught my attention, and engendered my outrage, and sense of unfairness. I want to particularly point out the investigative reporter chops of Bob Brigham.
