The real threat to McConnell is defection from the current ranks of 50 GOP senators. If Romney, Murkowski, Collins, and possibly Sasse decide to caucus as an independent group, that would open the floodgates, split the GOP for future elections, and force Mitch from his leadership. I, for one, wait with hope that one of those four will start the ball rolling.
