The spread of false and misleading information, whether intentional or not, is one of the most consequential issues in America and around the world. And this “information disorder” crisis exacerbates all other issues, from democracy to climate change, from health care to racial justice.
To explore this multipronged issue, the Aspen Institute brought together a group of experts from government, academia, philanthropy and civil society. Following six months of collaboration and research, the 16-person Commission on Information Disorder detailed its findings and recommendations in an 80-page report released Monday.
The report aims to call attention to an urgent issue and provide guidelines for how decision-makers can take immediate action to reduce the impacts of mis- and disinformation.
Because information disorder affects so many other issues, the Aspen Institute sought to have its commission be as diverse and wide-ranging as possible. The commission was led by journalist Katie Couric, Color of Change President Rashad Robinson and Chris Krebs, former director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

Very very good article regarding how to combat the mis and dis information so rampant in, not only our country, but the world. I believe this in one of the biggest threats to our world today. It causes widespread brain washing, evokes strong emotional responses in people and just spreads hate, anger and distrust. News outlets need to be held accountable, at the very least. It’s astounding to me that news outlets are not legally responsible to report the news and can be considered “forms of entertainment” when they are brought to court for slander. Not only has this phenomena caused deaths but also incredible divides within families and broken friendships and unnecessary anger, rage and hate between people and groups of people. Complete disharmony for a society. If this isn’t regulated, I believe it will take the extreme disasters of climate change to bring people together and realize what and who is important in their lives. I have some family members, fortunately not many, that have been indoctrinated into believing all this crazy disinformation, but I refuse to be angry with them or have negative feelings towards them, because I love them and I will not allow this outside source and phenomena to ruin our relationships. I know they are just believing the sources of “news” they are watching or information they are getting. It is so sad really. I hope someone in authority can take this report and put some of it into action.
Stephan,
This is by far one of the best articles you have ever posted. I hope it generates to millions of Americans and abroad.
I would also like to take this opportunity, to commend you on your transparency, integrity, and genuine concern for your readers well being, on many levels.
Consciousness, is beginning to be a valued asset in our world, because of leaders like you.
Misinformation is rampant in America, and virtually every newspaper and media outlet are guilty. For example, the New York Times, NPR, CNN, and others conveniently buried all of the Biden red flags, including his mediocre academic and political record, financial dealings with Delaware banks, and the shady activities of Joe with his son Hunter. The media hatred of Trump was so intense that they did everything that they could to defeat him, including ignoring and/or whitewashing Joe Biden. I truly blame the Democratic Party for giving us such a feeble minded and bumbling fool for a President, but is was the media that facilitated this.
Michael,
Let me guess, you’re a big fan of OAN, Fox, & Newsmax? By the way Hunter Biden doesn’t have an obsessive fixation with you, and Trump’s top military adviser, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, single-handedly took secret action to limit cuckoo crazy Trump, from potentially ordering a dangerous military strike or launching nuclear weapons. P.S. President Biden WON – by my vote too.
Michael is an intellectual and politicak thug, hiding behind anonymity, and I am disappointed in Stephan for puttimg up with his garbage.
As you will note, I have deleted Michael’s comment.
