Stephan: The Republican Party's candidates are motivating the party's racist base by talking about civil violence, as this article describes. The Republicans do not want a democracy, and they are gearing up their followers who are obsessed with guns and heavily armed, to prepare for violence. I would take this quite seriously. We are splitting into two countries. For this to be avoided the Democrats must win significantly expanded majorities in both houses of Congress. It will give democracy a chance, and there will be climate change remediation. It won't end the schism, but it will allow it to be worked out without so much violence. I don't think we are going to be one country again, at least not until 2040-2045.
Days before Maryland’s July 19 primary, Republican candidate for State Attorney General, Michael Peroutka stood up at an Italian restaurant in Rockville and imagined how a foreign enemy might attack America.
“We would expect them to make our borders porous,” Peroutka told the crowd, which had come to hear the Republicans running for state attorney general. “We would expect them to make our cities unsafe places to live. We would expect them to try to ruin our economy.” The country was “at war,” he explained, “and the enemy has co-opted members and agencies and agents of our government.”
On Tuesday, Peroutka easily dispatched a more moderate Republican to win the nomination. State Del. Dan Cox, who won Donald Trump’s endorsement after supporting the former president’s effort to subvert the 2020 election, also dispatched a Republican endorsed by the state’s popular governor, Larry Hogan.
I agree with your synopsis Stephan. I am worried about President Biden’s infection with the Covid virus. I wonder if the Republicans are responsible for that somehow!
I am very curious…why do you call out 2040-45?
