Manchin’s decision provokes fury over potential for warmer world

Stephan:  Think about this: The United States and China are the world's two greatest polluters. It is desperately important that both countries dramatically reduce their damage to the environment. Today, one man, Joe Manchin, one of the most corrupt members of the Senate, a man who all his political life has whored for the carbon industries, which has made him personally a millionaire, is now blocking legislation for climate remediation in the United States. This one man is affecting the wellbeing of almost 8 Billion people. And no one seems to be able to do anything about it except the people of West Virginia. Can you do us a favor West Virginians and get this scumbag out of the Senate in 2024? And can we all vote for Democrats so that the Senate gets more Democrats in office and Manchin's power disappears? Failure to do that condemns your children and grandchildren to much more difficult lives.

Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-W.Va.) decision to move ahead with a reconciliation deal that doesn’t involve climate change risks consigning the entire world to a warmer future, scientists, Democrats and advocates said Friday in reacting to the news.

Democratic senators for about a year have been negotiating with Manchin to try to get him on board with investments that would dramatically reduce U.S. contribution to climate change.

But on Friday, Manchin said he’s not interested in immediately moving forward with a deal that includes those investments.

Manchin told West Virginia radio host Hoppy Kercheval that the latest inflation data means it’s “not prudent” to make the investments in climate change — or raise taxes on the wealthy.

Manchin, relaying a discussion he’d had telling Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) of his decision, suggested he might be able to agree to a deal at a later date.

“I said, ‘Chuck, can we just wait until the inflation figures come out in July?’” he said. “I want climate. I want […]

Montana GOP lawmaker informs colleagues the womb ‘serves no specific purpose’ to the life of a woman

Stephan:  It is amazing to me that Republicans now no longer even attempt to cover up or deny their conviction that women are second class and their belief that Republican men should be able to dictate not only what women do with their bodies, but even their right to travel. In fact, it has gotten down to the point where motherhood itself is no longer seen as a unique and essential role in women's lives. At no previous time in my life has the male dominance issue been so overt and fundamental to a political party's agenda.
According to a report from the Great Falls Tribune, earlier this week State Rep. Brad Tschida (R-Missoula) sent out a controversial email offering them his opinion that a woman’s womb serves no purpose in her “life and well-being.”

According to a report from the Great Falls Tribune, earlier this week State Rep. Brad Tschida (R-Missoula) sent out a controversial email offering them his opinion that a woman’s womb serves no purpose in her “life and well-being.”

The conservative Tshida, who has also questioned the 2020 election results, was reportedly passing along something he claims he heard on a podcast.

According to the report, the former Montana House leader who is now running for a seat in the state Senate passed along what he heard in an email to over 100 of his colleagues at a time when conservative lawmakers in deep red states are making up new laws banning abortion.

The Tribune reports, “Tschida told the Daily Montanan he did not remember the name […]

‘They Want to Hold Women Captive’: GOP Blocks Bill Protecting Right to Travel for Abortion

Stephan:  It is unclear to me how any woman who thinks she is the equal of any man could vote Republican since the Republican Party's position is clearly that men are dominant and women are subordinate and second class. Yet millions of women are Republicans so I assume they also believe their gender is subordinate and second class. If you know a Republican woman ask her how she deals with this, and what she thinks.

Democratic leaders and reproductive rights advocates swiftly blasted anti-choice Republican lawmakers on Thursday after U.S. Sen. James Lankford blocked a bill intended to protect the right of pregnant people across the country to travel for abortion services.

The GOP senator from Oklahoma—which banned nearly all abortions this year even before the Roe v. Wade reversal—objected to Democrats’ effort to pass by unanimous consent the Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act of 2022.

Introduced this week by Democratic Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (Nev.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Patty Murray (Wash.), and Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.), the bill would make clear that patients can cross state lines for abortion care and empower the U.S. attorney general and affected individuals to take legal action against those who attempt to restrict that right.

While Lankford took action to block the bill, its sponsors and other supporters emphasized that his party is behind the ongoing and sweeping assault on reproductive rights on a national scale.

Murray took aim at her GOP colleagues on the Senate floor, declaring that […]

The GOP Just Asked an Authoritarian to Headline Its Most Important Conference

Stephan:  I don't know how the Republican Party could make their intentions for American governance clearer than they have by inviting Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a notorious christofascist, to be their keynote speaker at their most important party conference. I do not understand how anyone who supports American democracy cannot understand what the Orbán invitation represents.

Just months after American conservatives were criticized for bringing the hugely influential Conservative Political Action Conference to Hungary, that country’s ultra-right-wing authoritarian leader is coming to America.

Viktor Orbán will headline the next edition of CPAC, which is taking place in Dallas from August 4-7, his press secretary told the Hungarian state news agency MTI. The news was confirmed by the American right-wing outlet Daily Caller, which quotes Matt Schlapp, the head of the American Conservative Union and organizer of CPAC.

“CPAC is proud to host Prime Minister Viktor Orbán,” Schlapp said. “The fight against socialism is a global one.” CPAC did not immediately respond to VICE News’ request for comment.

Orbán, who won his fourth term in office in April, is the EU’s longest-serving leader—after he changed the country’s rules about how long a prime minister can stay in office.

When Orbán headlined CPAC Hungary in May, he outlined a 12-point plan for how other leaders can emulate his capture and consolidation of […]

11 House Republicans attended a White House meeting with Trump to strategize about overturning the election results on January 6. Six of them later asked for pardons.

Stephan:  The Republican Party is no longer interested in ethical behavior amongst its Congressional members or, indeed ethical government of any kind. What they care about is power and the ability to reshape America as a White supremacy, male-dominant, christofascist anocracy. This story of 11 House MAGAt scumbags illustrates my point. In a Congress that lived up to their oaths these people would be thrown out of office for their criminal behavior. That they face no accountability reveals the sorry state of the Republican Party and the American Congress.

  • The White House held a December 21, 2020, meeting to discuss a fringe theory to overturn the election.
  • The January 6, 2021, committee shared the names of 11 House Republicans who went to that meeting.
  • They included Reps. Matt Gaetz and Jim Jordan, as well as Rep.-elect Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The House select committee investigating January 6, 2021, offered new details on Tuesday about a meeting at the White House that involved several Republican members of Congress ahead of the meeting of the joint session of Congress to certify the 2020 presidential election.

Democratic Rep. Stephanie Murphy of Florida, a member of the committee, said the December 21 meeting was part of an effort to “disseminate his false claims and to encourage members of the public to fight the outcome on January 6.”

Vice President Mike Pence, Rudy Giuliani, and Mark Meadows, the White House chief […]
