Abortion and College Admissions: Roe v. Wade Decision Makes Students Reconsider School Choices

Stephan:  This piece was written prior to the announcement of the Supreme Court Roe decision but after the leaked opinion. As you can see the abortion issue was already affecting the college choices of fertile young women. Over time this is going to have a significant effect on the enrollment of colleges and universities in Red states. And it should.

For 13-year-old Alena, receiving acceptance to the University of Alabama (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine through an early assurance program was a dream come true. Alena, whose passion “is to create a space for girls of color in STEM” and some might call a prodigy, is already dual-enrolled in bachelor’s programs (and on full scholarships) at Oakwood University in Alabama and Arizona State University. UAB is on her list of top medical schools.

It might be too bad for UAB. “Right now, if the leaked decision stands, I would not consider going to school in a state where abortion is against the law,” Alena, tells Teen Vogue. “This matters to me.” (Alena, a minor, preferred to only use her legal first name).

She’s not alone. The Supreme Court’s intention to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark abortion legislation that has been law for almost 50 years, will transform so many aspects of daily life in the United States. One will likely be college enrollments. Young people who can get pregnant may reconsider going to […]

Ohio Republicans’ attempted erasure of a 10-year-old rape victim is incredibly sick and disturbed

Stephan:  It is hard for me to tell you how loathsome I find people like Jim Jordan, David Yost, Mike DeWine, and a host of other Republicans. These people put their own advancement and their own power above decency, American democracy, or any concern for girls who are raped. You have probably heard the story of the 10-year-old girl -- actually, she was impegnated when she was raped at 9 years of age. How she had to be taken to Indiana because Ohio had no exceptions for rape or incest, and Indiana's had not kicked in yet. You may also know about how the Republicans tried to turn this story into a political fairytale, something made up by the pro-choice world when, as has now been proven, it is disgustingly true, and here is the truth. What kind of person thinks the best course of action for a pregnant 10-year-old is to carry a child to delivery. And then what?

The first and most important thing to recognize right now is that a heinous, violent crime was committed on a 10-year-old Ohio child, and thankfully justice has now found the alleged perpetrator.

Columbus man was indicted Wednesday in a case that made national and international headlines about a 10-year-old girl who had to travel to Indiana for an abortion after Ohio’s abortion ban went into effect following the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

The story is horrifying and tragic. She has experienced enormous trauma. My heart breaks for her, and I’m very grateful to all the hard-working professionals out there providing her and her family assistance in what must be a truly awful time.

Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and his spokesman responded to the story by ignoring questions about whether children should be forced to have their rapists’ babies. Then DeWine allies contacted members […]

US emissions inflict almost $2 Trillion in damage to other countries: study

Stephan:  Let's make a list of what the United States leads the world in: most people incarcerated, most expensive health care, highest maternal mortality, highest infant mortality, most money spent on the military, and leading polluter. I could go on, but I think you get my point. That's not what the politicians of either party tell you, but those are the facts. Because America has only one social priority, greed to produce profit, every day we betray what the Founders had in mind and, as this report, lays out, every day we harm earth's matrix of life. The only thing that is going to change this is we ourselves, the voters of America. So how are you planning to vote?

China and the U.S., the world’s top two greenhouse gas emitters, have collectively cost the global economy more than $3 trillion, forming the basis for potential litigation, according to research published Tuesday.

Researchers from Dartmouth College found that five of the world’s biggest emitters — the U.S., China, India, Russia and Brazil — cost the world some $6 trillion in gross domestic product over a quarter-century period. All five nations are among the five largest emitters worldwide except Brazil, which is the 12th-largest. The figure represents about 11 percent of annual global GDP during the study period.

The two biggest emitters, China and the U.S., accounted for more than $1.8 trillion each in lost global income from 1990 to 2014.

“This research provides an answer to the question of whether there is a scientific basis for climate liability claims — the answer is yes,” Dartmouth PhD candidate Christopher Callahan, the lead author of the study, said in a statement. “We have quantified each nation’s culpability for historical temperature-driven income changes in every other […]

Manchin, Playing to the Home Crowd, Is Fighting Electric Cars to the End

Stephan:  Joe Manchin, the senator from West Virginia is, in my opinion, the most loathsome Democrat in Congress. He's not really a Democrat he is a working whore for the carbon industries that made him a millionaire. He damages the wellbeing of the people of West Virginia almost daily, and yet they vote him into office again and again. So the real problem is not Joe Manchin, it is the people of West Virginia who inflict this man on the world. Could you please stop doing that?

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Joe Manchin III’s opposition to government incentives for electric vehicles is a sticking point in negotiations over President Biden’s tax and spending package — talks that appear to be coming to a head this week after months of fits and starts.

Mr. Biden and most Senate Democrats want billions of dollars in tax credits for consumers who buy electric vehicles, which they see as key to fighting climate change.

The transition away from polluting gas-powered cars and trucks is even more critical to the administration’s climate goals after a recent Supreme Court decision that curtailed the government’s authority to cut pollution from power plants.

Mr. Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat who has taken more campaign contributions from oil, gas and coal companies than any other senator, has assailed the proposed tax credits, which would be worth up to $12,500 per vehicle, as unnecessary and wasteful. He has also expressed skepticism about increased government spending […]

Gov. Newsom signs bill allowing suits against gun makers for negligence

Stephan:  With the exception of Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema, most Democrats have an interest in promoting wellbeing, and this is excellent news about holding the gun industry responsible for how their murder weapons are used. Personally, I think Gavin Newsom would be an excellent Democratic Party candidate for president in 2024.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Tuesday allowing individuals as well as the state and local governments to sue gun makers for negligence, potentially paving the way to a wave of lawsuits if the legislation survives inevitable legal challenges.

The measure reflects an effort by California and other states led by Democrats to strengthen gun restrictions following mass shootings across the country in the face of fierce opposition by the industry, its Republican allies and a conservative Supreme Court.

California’s measure creates a code of conduct that features various safeguards intended to reduce gun violence, authorizing lawsuits for violations by the state attorney general, city attorneys and individual citizens. The bill takes effect next summer.

“If you’ve been hurt or a family member is a victim of gun violence, you can now go to court and hold these makers of deadly weapons accountable,” Newsom said as he signed the bill in a tweeted […]
