Have you seen the latest viral trend on TikTok? People are asking trees to touch their shoulders and get this – most of the time, it’s actually happening!
Videos all over TikTok show what seemingly has a tree branch reaching out to touch someone’s shoulder or face after being asked to and it’s blowing my mind.
Can Trees Hear You?
After seeing video after video about trees being able to hear us, I went down that rabbit hole and turns out, a study says trees can actually hear us.
According to research from Tel Aviv University, plants and flowers can react to sound.
Among multiple research studies, the overarching conclusion has been even though plants don’t have ears, they can “hear” sounds in their local environment and can even react.
So, it may not seem so crazy after all.

Can trees hear us? Dunno, but I can tell you that a philodendron had awareness that I intended to cut off some leaves! After reading “The Secret Life of Plants” back in the early 70’s, I tried to validate the results. I hooked up a philodendron to a “Lie Detector” (actually a galvanometer) sold by Radio Shack to see what would happen if I snipped off some leaves. After hooking up the instrument and zeroing the needle, I picked up some scissors and started to move in. I happened to look at the dial, and saw the needle was pegged! I layed down the scissors, re-centered the dial, and picked up the scissors again. Same result! I repeated this several times over the next few days with similar results. Finally, I centered the dial and WITHOUT picking up the scissors, decided to simply pinch off a leaf with my fingers. Again, same results!
