There are so many bad things arising from the Dobbs decision to overturn Roe. None of which were thought through by the court Rightwing majority, because they are ideologues not justices. One of these bad things is very ironic. The already inferior healthcare structure in Red states has gotten much worse, and will continue to worsen. If you are a Republican living in a Republican state The Republican Party, on the basis of factual data, is proveably harmful to your wellbeing.
Jeremy Faust, MD, editor-in-chief of MedPage Today, sits down with Jamila Perritt, MD, MPH, president and CEO of Physicians for Reproductive Health (PRH), and Kristyn Brandi, MD, a fellow at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), to discuss providing ob/gyn care in the post-Roe landscape.
The following is a transcript of their remarks:
Faust: Obviously, this new ruling kind of makes everywhere worse, but some places are even worse. There was some discussion about whether people who were training would actually be advised not to go into ob/gyn residencies in states where there just isn’t the ability to provide ethical care. Where do you come down on this?
If you’re a third- or fourth-year medical student thinking of going into ob/gyn, do you tell them, “You know what, I understand you’re from this state, or you want to go there, but that’s just a place where you’re unfortunately not going to be able to train and maybe even be put in situations that are challenging ethically.” Where do you come down on this?
Brandi: Absolutely. I would speak as someone that has just […]

The transition out of the carbon era is going to be far more complex than most people, including a large number of Congressional members in both houses, seem to comprehend. Here is an example of what I mean; this being a report on lithium's impact. I think this lithium trend should also be seen as a component of the entire restructuring the move out of carbon power is going to require.
The US’s transition to electric vehicles could require three times as much lithium as is currently produced for the entire global market, causing needless water shortages, Indigenous land grabs, and ecosystem destruction inside and outside its borders, new research finds.
It warns that unless the US’s dependence on cars in towns and cities falls drastically, the transition to lithium battery-powered electric vehicles by 2050 will deepen global environmental and social inequalities linked to mining – and may even jeopardize the 1.5C global heating target.
But ambitious policies investing in mass transit, walkable towns and cities, and robust battery recycling in the US would slash the amount of extra lithium required in 2050 by more than 90%.
In fact, this first-of-its-kind modeling shows it is possible to have more transport options for Americans that are safer, healthier and less segregated, and less harmful mining while making rapid progress to zero emissions.
The research by the Climate and Community Project and University of California, Davis, shared exclusively with the Guardian, comes at a critical juncture with the rollout of historic funding for […]
I know, because about 12% of my readership is made up of Republicans and they write me about it, that some consider SR very partisan and anti-Republican. Let me say again so there is no unclarity on this. I do not care about political tribalism except anthropologically. What I care about is fostering wellbeing. If Republicans, in fact, fostered wellbeing, it would be my pleasure to acknowledge and compliment them. But they do not foster wellbeing. Everything they do and stand for degrades wellbeing in ways that can be objectively verified. Here is the latest example of what I mean.
In a time when life expectancy in the U.S. is declining for the first time in decades and Americans can expect on average to enjoy even fewer years of retirement, Republicans are considering a radical plan to shrink the retirement window.
The party is considering a proposal to raise the retirement age for Social Security to 70, per The Washington Post, which means that workers and retirees would have to work an additional 3 to 4 years to receive full benefit. This proposal would mostly affect younger workers who have not yet started to receive benefits from the program.
Under this proposal, Americans could expect to be able to enjoy retirement […]
The Republican Party in general, with christofascist Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as the most blatant example, does not like public education, and particularly and with great venom, does not like or want taught the truthful history of racism and slavery in the United States. I think it is very telling in the second decade of the 21st century that sufficient American voters in Florida agreed with his views that they elected someone as despicable as Ron DeSantis as their governor. But they did, and in the state he is quite popular. It tells you a lot about Floridians.
“Florida is doing its best to shut down discussions about race, slavery, anything having to do with a challenge to the idea that racism is still a real factor in American life today,” said one author and former professor.
Academics and Democratic lawmakers reacted angrily Thursday after the administration of Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis rejected a new high school Advanced Placement African-American studies course—without even seeing its syllabus—claiming it violates the state’s ban on “woke” education and “lacks educational value.”
Some Republican Florida officials said they believe the African-American studies course offered by the College Board—which approves AP courses and runs SAT testing—violates the state’s Stop WOKE Act by promoting critical race theory (CRT), a graduate-level academic framework positing that systemic racism is inherent in U.S. society.
DeSantis said the Stop WOKE Act, which applies to schools from […]
I think we need to prepare for the fact that the greed and short-term thinking of human beings are going to condemn all beings on the planet to the devastating consequences of climate change because the leadership of the developed nations in the world in the present day just couldn't come together to do what needed to be done to stop global warming from increasing and exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius. Our children and grandchildren are going to hate and condemn us.
Scientists have said that, in order to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis, all or almost all of coal burning must cease by 2050.
Yet in 2022, China produced a record amount of coal at 4.496 billion tonnes, which is nine percent more than the year before, according to National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data reported by Reuters. This isn’t necessarily a surprise, as China joined Europe in emphasizing domestic energy security in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the global energy crisis, even if that means relying on the dirtiest fossil fuel.
“We don’t want to be like Europe and transform at the cost of energy security. They are now declaring that they are taking a step back in order to take two steps forward later,” Tsinghua University climate change and energy professor Li Zheng said in November 2022, as OilPrice.com reported.
China maintained at the COP27 climate conference in Egypt last […]
