Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin and congressional Republicans faced fresh backlash on Tuesday after the U.S. Census Bureau released new data showing that the nation’s child poverty rate more than doubled in 2022 compared to the previous year, thanks in large part to the expiration of the boosted Child Tax Credit.
The expanded CTC, an American Rescue Plan (ARP) policy that sent eligible families up to $300 per month for each child and eliminated the original CTC’s regressive phase-in, helped push the U.S. child poverty rate to a record low of 5.2% in 2021.

As someone who grew up in WV and left in their 20’s I’m not surprised one bit. In my opinion it is a rare West Virginian who should be given any power on a national level. For the most part I find them a strange mix of self-doubt, pride, and yet surprisingly stiff-necked against, and suspicious of, any outside ideas or influence. There are reasons WV continues to rank near the bottom of so many quality-of-living categories and I’m convinced one of the big reasons is they are largely unable or unwilling to accept ideas that aren’t their own.
Well there may be votes against the child tax credit, but I suspect that when Zelensky needs a couple extra Billion it will be fast tracked to success.
