More corruption by oligarchs to get what they want from the Supreme Court. How can anyone say that we are a law based nation when this is the reality of our Supreme Court? The Democrats control the Senate who aren’t they doing anything about this; that’s what I would like to know.

Although Democrats have won the popular vote in seven of the United States’ last eight presidential elections, they have had terrible luck with the U.S. Supreme Court. Only one-third of the High Court consists of Democratic appointees, and the other two-thirds consists of three justices appointed by former President Donald Trump and three appointed by previous Republican presidents.
The High Court leaned conservative during the 1990s, but GOP-appointed justices of the past such as Anthony Kennedy, David Souter and Sandra Day O’Connor were a lot more nuanced than the current 6-3 Republican majority — a majority that, according to Guardian reporters Ed Pilkington and Nick Surgey, billionaire Charles Koch is hoping to take full advantage of.
Koch has been a major donor to right-wing causes and GOP candidates, and the Guardian journalists report that he is encouraging the High Court to work against “federal agencies and government regulations.”

The election of Louisiana’s Mike Johnson as House Speaker proves the premise that all the GOP has left are Donald Trump and hate.

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) is responding to a plan Democrats are putting together that would allow the Senate to vote on the more than 300 U.S. Military confirmations he has been blocking for most of the year by blaming the wars in Ukraine and Israel on Democrats and President Joe Biden.
“Democrats are preparing to send a resolution to the Rules Committee that would allow most of the 300-plus promotions Tuberville is blocking to be considered on the floor en bloc,” Punchbowl News reported Thursday. “This would dramatically reduce the number of votes the Senate would need to take to approve the long-stalled promotions. It would be in effect for a little over a year,” and not be a permanent change.
“The resolution, described to us by several sources, includes a carve-out for upper-level promotions like members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and combatant commanders, who would still require individual votes.
When I tell you that the Republican Congressional members do not care about the wellbeing of the people they represent, this is what I mean. I think this is disgusting. We must flip the House if the United States is going to become a decent country.

Amid the ravages of the first two years of the pandemic in the U.S., a small light became visible: The government showed that it could choose to move millions of children and their families out of poverty.
It is no longer choosing to do so, instead allowing most COVID-related aid packages to expire. And as researchers feared, poverty in America is again soaring — reaching pre-pandemic heights and in some cases going higher.
“It confirmed that a lot of this is really just a choice,” said Kyle Moore, an economist who studies inequality for the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. “We had programs in place that demonstrably cut poverty, particularly child poverty. We allowed those programs to expire. And poverty went back up — a lot.”

Gerber’s Poultry, a poultry plant in Kidron, Ohio, which produces Amish Farm Chicken, is under investigation after federal agents found more than two dozen minors illegally employed in meat processing and sanitation.
“The discovery of yet another meat processing facility in the U.S. relying on child labor is the latest reminder of the harms that industrial animal agriculture inflicts at every turn, with the most vulnerable — children, people of color, immigrants, and nonhuman animals — paying the highest price,” Delcianna J. Winders, associate professor of Law at Vermont Law and Graduate School told Truthout.
The plant was raided on the evening of October 4 by Homeland Security Investigations and the Federal Bureau of Investigation agents following reports about the plant illegally employing children. A local resident told NBC Newsthat the children, mainly from Guatemala, work the plant’s second shift after attending school during the day.
