This week’s revelation that Donald Trump is already plotting new ways to try to put himself permanently above the law is just the latest reminder of the looming threat of lawless and emboldened right-wing forces in the United States. Trump’s new scheme to expand a Nixon-era policy memo to prohibit the Justice Department from prosecuting presidents, even after they leave office, is just a tiny hint of the greater threat. In recent months, several scholars have sounded the alarm that the United States is “sleepwalking towards authoritarianism.” The concern is not unfounded given that in his run for the presidency in 2024, Trump has boldly telegraphed his aspirations to impose an authoritarian future on the United States. It is interesting that Trump includes fascists in his complaint about who is taking over the US. They certainly ARE fascists and he is the top of the list. Regarding the fact that Americans are not raising their voices against this fascist MAGA group, it is true that there appears to be few voices speaking out. Why? Look at all the people who disagree and have spoken out who have been “swatted.” Trump and his MAGA followers seem to be a violent group who care nothing about the law—–only wanting THEIR beliefs and care nothing about democracy, rights, or even this country unless THEY are in charge. Okay, Americans, keep quiet and vote Dem in November and most of the rhetoric will die down. We must return to democracy and the rule of law and the only way that is going to happen is to put the fascists out of business and re-elect Joe Biden! Terri Quint
